A strong majority of American voters want serious action taken to solve the illegal immigration problem – including 53 percent who say children born to illegal immigrant parents should not be automatic citizens, and 70% who say it's important to locate and deport those residing in the U.S. illegally – according to a recent poll by Zogby International.
The poll was conducted August 20-23, surveyed 2,062 likely voters, and asked: The Constitution provides that all children born in the U.S. are automatically U.S. citizens regardless of their parents' status. Should Congress pass an amendment to prevent children born in the U.S. from becoming citizens unless one of their parents is also a U.S. citizen?
A majority of respondents, 53 percent, said Congress should pass a law to prevent children born to non-citizen parents from being automatic citizens, and 39 percent said no such law should be passed.
An even stronger majority of independent voters, 58 percent , said yes to passing such a law, and 35% say no. Likewise, strong majorities of Tea Party supporters, 83 percent, and small business owners, 56 percent, say Congress needs to pass a law barring automatic citizenship for children born to illegal parents. Just 9 percent of Tea Party supporters and 35 percent of small business owners say no such law should be passed.
In addition, the poll asked: How important is it to develop a plan to stem the flow of illegal immigrants?
An incredible 92 percent of those responding said developing a plan to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. is important, including 74 percent who said it's very important. Just seven percent said such a plan is not important.
Among Independents responding, 96 percent said it's important, including 76 percent who said it's very important. Just 5 percent said it is not important.
In addition, a very sizable 83 percent of Democrats said it's important to develop a plan to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, and just 14 percent said it's not important.
An overwhelming 99 percent of Tea Party supporters said stemming the flow of illegal immigrants is important, including 96 percent who said it's very important. Less than one percent said it is not important.
In addition, 90 percent of small business owners said it's important, including 77 percent who said it's very important, and just nine percent who said it's not important.
The poll further asked: How important is it to locate and deport those illegally in the country?
A 70 percent majority of respondents said it is important to deport those illegally in the country, including 45 percent who said it's very important. Just 28 percent said it is not important to do so.
