Ivory Tower is considered a convivial refuge of drones from the corporate world, a place where eggheads have ample time to debate ideas, often during lunch or over drinks after class. Professors, particularly those at research universities, are simply working much less and much easier these days. They do not have to compete for easy grant money, cheating like hell, recycling garbage research, turning out less articles and books, coping with the speedup in communications afforded by better technology, and junketing the globe to establish the kind of international reputation that's now necessary to thrive.
Basil Venitis notes that many colleges offer instruction online. An increasing number of colleges, such as MIT, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkley, NYU, Oxford, and Cambridge, are placing course content, including lectures and instructional materials, online for free. There are many programs that allow students to earn college credits by studying and completing an exam remotely. Through these types of programs, a student can earn college credit through self-study at a fraction of the cost of a traditional college course.
Mexico's Ministry of Education, Meximinitrue, runs the National Open and Distance University of Mexico, a virtual college. This University now offers online college-degree programs to Mexican citizens living abroad. Mexicans account for more than half of the estimated a dozen million illegal immigrants in the United States. Many immigration bills are making their way through U.S. state legislatures, which would prohibit illegal immigrants from attending institutions of higher education in the United States.
Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) is the world's largest university, with four million students. It has online courses and its own satellite in orbit to connect the campus with thousands of TV stations across the world that broadcast its lectures. IGNOU has built up its foreign student base without even trying, spending no money on advertising and working with virtual universities that approached it seeking help designing their curricula.
For most of its 25 years of operations, IGNOU has delivered courses mainly via radio and television. About four years ago the university began putting full courses online. Though all the course materials are free online, students must pay if they want to take a test on the material and get credit for the course if they pass. Students are diverse in age as well as nationality. The goal of the virtual university is to serve those who simply cannot take traditional courses.
University of the People is the world's first tuition-free online college dedicated to the global advancement and democratization of higher education. This high-quality global educational model embraces the worldwide presence of the Internet and dropping technology costs to bring university-level studies within reach of millions of people across the world. With the support of respected academics, humanitarians, and other visionaries, the University of the People student body represents a new wave in global education.
The largest for-profit college on Earth is the University of Phoenix(UPX), a subsidiary of Apollo Group. UPX has an enrollment of one million students! UPX has more than 200 campuses worldwide and confers degrees in over 100 degree programs. It also offers many online programs.

The list includes Bill Gates(Microsoft), Larry Page(Google), Michael Dell(Dell), David Geffen(Geffen Records), Steve Jobs(Apple), Richard Branson(Virgin), Ralph Lauren(Ralph Lauren), Jerry Yang(Yahoo) and Zuckerberg(Facebook).
