Washington (CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday he will add the DREAM Act, a controversial immigration measure, to a defense policy bill the Senate will take up next week. The decision means the defense bill, which often passes with bipartisan support, will be home to two major, thorny political issues – the other being the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Reid called the DREAM Act "really important" and said it should be passed because it provides a path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who go to college or serve in the military. DREAM is an acronym for Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act. "I know we can't do comprehensive immigration reform," Reid said at a news conference. "But those Republicans we had in the last Congress have left us."
Many Hispanic voters are angry with Democratic leaders for not doing more to pass an immigration overhaul. The decision by Reid to add the DREAM Act now could help soothe that anger. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Reid's decision "needlessly controversial."
The Senate will need 60 votes to take up the bill next week, and Reid said Tuesday he doesn't know if he has enough votes. *********************************************  Senator Reid Declares He Will Push DREAM Act

In a press conference in the Capitol this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced that he will offer the DREAM Act amnesty bill (S.729) as an amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization Bill. Action on this bill is expected as early as next week! (To see the video of Senator Reid's press conference, click here.) Like previous versions of the DREAM Act, S.729 will grant amnesty to illegal aliens who entered the U.S. as minors and meet certain educational requirements or serve in the military. In particular, the bill grants immediate legal status to illegal aliens who have merely enrolled in an institution of higher education or have received a high school diploma. And, while S.729 conditions the ultimate granting of legal permanent residence status upon finishing two years at an institution of higher learning or two years in the military, the bill allows Homeland Security, "in the Secretary's discretion," to waive these requirements in their entirety upon the showing of hardship. In the press conference, Reid described the beneficiaries of this bill as "kids" and "boys and girls," but S.729 allows illegal aliens up to the age of 35 to be eligible to receive amnesty and qualify for federal student loans. Moreover, S.729 also allows states to provide in-state tuition to illegal aliens—at a time when many Americans can't afford to send their own students to college. Finally, as a result of S.729, those who receive amnesty may petition for their relatives to be admitted to the U.S. as soon as they reach the age of 21. ACT NOW TO STOP IT
Friends, we need your phone calls and faxes immediately to counter a gigantic nationwide amnesty push that began a few hours ago.
The Senate is being bombarded with demands today that it pass the DREAM Act amnesty during the next three weeks before Congress adjourns for final campaigning.
It now is possible that there could be an amnesty vote as early as next week!
ACTION 1: Send free faxes to your 3 Members of Congress. They are posted on your Action Board at www.numbersusa.com/actionbuffet.
ACTION 2: Phone your own Senators. This is the most important immediate need. Make sure that staffers in this office end their day with a huge surge of anti-amnesty calls.

Although we as yet are not getting a mainstream confirmation, the internet and Capitol Hill are abuzz with reports that Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) says he will bring the DREAM Act amnesty to a vote as an amendment to the Defense appropriations bill -- maybe as early as next week.
It is absolutely imperative that Congress get as many (or many more) phone calls OPPOSING the DREAM Amnesty as they are already getting pushing it.
Phone now and then start phoning again first thing Wednesday morning.
Every pro-amnesty religious group, pro-amnesty leftist group and pro-amnesty conservative group in the country has mobilized their memberships today and through the week in a last-ditch effort at some kind of amnesty.
The open-borders organizations and leaders in Congress are in a panic that if they don't pass some kind of amnesty during the next month they may not have another opportunity for several years. Desperate politicians are always a threat to the citizenry.
Sen. Reid is desperately trying to create enough passion among Nevada's immigrant voters to build enough of an election turnout to help him win a close re-election race.
And political media are reporting today that the pro-amnesty forces are now acknowledging that they have lost their long effort to pass a blanket amnesty and won't have another chance for years. Thus, they are in total desperation to pass the DREAM Act Amnesty for about 2 million illegal aliens under the age of 35.
We must not allow the desperation of the open-borders crowd lead to a terrible act of Congress just before we are set to block amnesty for years.
Please phone now and tell Senators that any effort to grant amnesty to illegal aliens during a Jobs Depression will be viewed with utmost disdain at the polls in November.
