Culture shock:
In October 2007, I did the tour bus thing in Washington, D.C. It was a lovely ride from the Cherry Hills trailer park to Mount Vernon. Arlington. Lincoln Memorial. the Mall. WW2, Korea, and Vietnam Memorials. Tour ended in the park south of the Whitehouse. All lovely and pristinely kept.
I've no idea why, but our route back to the trailer park took us through something I'd never seen out here in the Northwest. A "slum" that was not TWO miles from the Whitehouse. Boarded up shops, broken windows, trash littering the streets. Derelicts all over the area. I never saw any, but I've no doubt many carried guns.
This sure was an education in "class warfare." The separation of rich, and poor, never made clearer. There are no honored Monuments in this area. The scene itself may be a tribute to how we treat our least "desirable" people. Walt
