I just recently started, myself, and I thought I'd do things the Gingery
way, on the cheap. I used white play sand from Home Depot, sifted through a
Walmart spatter screen, some powdered fireclay and pearlite. I packed it
into a 5-gallon office type trash can and a top welded up from old political
signs. I fired it up using BBQ charcoal to heat my 1.5 quart crucible, made
from some excess 4"x4" 1/4" wall square tubing. The charcoal fire, stoked by
the exhaust from my shop-vac, easily melted four old aircraft pistons into
ingots.
I may build something fancier later, but for now, I like the mental exercise
of throwing ingenuity at the problem, instead of throwing money at it.

Hi Ron,
It would be a lot easier to use propane as a fuel rather than charcoal.
I saw some links here and there on the web on propane blast furnaces;
I'll look into them to see about getting plans for construction.
Performance wise, doesn anyone know if there a big difference?
