Just to amplify Dennis' post, three phase motors have lower torque
ripple, this translates into less lathe ringing which translates into
better finish.
Also, if you look at Surplus Center
<https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=10-2395&catname=electric>,
3 phase motors are MUCH less expensive than comparable single phase motors.
