My Atlas is a lot heavier, but I would think you should be able to do 10 thou in alum. easily w/ a sharp tool. Clearance angle can be quits small on shaper bits compared w/ lathe bits (2-3* vs 7*+ on lathe) and you can use lots of back rack on alum. Counter to old shaper manuals/tests, I use a "square" tool for most work (~85* included angle, side edge nearly vertical), but you have to crank the table back as it only cuts in one direction (often easier than reversing feed anyway - you don't lose your feed adjustment).

(And yep, for all my good advise, I'm using no back or side rake, just a flat top tool. My lazy bad)
