I haven't built the lathe, but I would:
1. be sure of generous fillets on inside corners.
2. you are gating into the heavy section
3. I think I'd try a 2" or 2 1/8" sprue, it will act as a riser, so the dia. should be larger than the 1 7/8" section thickness. Also a generous well under sprue.
4 use a larger gate, say 1"w x 3/4" deep
5. try not to pour too hot. For thick sections, pour as cool as you dare.
6. If your pot will hold enough metal, an 1 1/4" riser on the other end might help, thou it shouldn't be necessary.
