| Dear Members Click links for full articles if not posted Mexico complains that illegal aliens now feel "uncomfortable" in Tucson Last week, Juan Manuel Calderón Jaimes, head of the Mexican Consulate in Tucson, spoke out against what he sees as the mistreatment of Mexican nationals living in the country illegally by Tucson police. Jaimes says that illegal aliens in the city are now afraid to report crimes or have any contact with local police out of fear that they will be deported. He also complained to the Arizona Daily Star about local officers inquiring into the immigration status of people stopped for traffic violations, saying: "In some ways, SB 1070 has been enforced in Tucson for many years." Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villaseñor strongly objects to the Mexican Consul's complaints, and says his officers have every right to report illegal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Jaimes actually gave a warning to the citizens of Tucson: "The basic function of the Police Department is to keep the community safe. If people don't feel comfortable reporting crimes … crime is going to increase in Tucson." Over the last several months, Jaimes has filed several complaints with the Tucson police over their supposed increased inquiries into immigration status. He also alleges that a Mexican national was turned over to the Border Patrol last month after reporting a robbery in his own apartment. ************************************************** 2. Americans Overwhelmingly Support Enforcement and Oppose Amnesty The immigration policy debate in the United States is often described as "controversial." In fact, it is hardly controversial at all. There are few issues on which there is greater consensus among American voters. The latest poll to affirm widespread support for immigration enforcement and opposition to amnesty was conducted by Quinnipiac University in early September. The poll of 1,905 voters found that by a 68% to 24% margin, Americans favor stricter enforcement of immigration laws over granting amnesty to illegal aliens. The poll also showed that a plurality of Americans support ending the practice of automatic birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens. The Quinnipiac poll also found that the public overwhelmingly disapproves of the way President Obama is handling immigration policy by a 60% to 28% margin. FAIR maintains an extensive database of polling information. These polls, conducted by numerous reputable polling organizations, are an important resource for members and activists to refute efforts by amnesty and open borders advocates to portray true immigration reform as controversial. ********************************************** 3. Unbelievable - We The People Vote - and the Judges just change it to their liking anyways - This must Stop!!!!!!!!!!! Ruling strikes down part of AZ Voter ID law PHOENIX - A federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down a key part of Arizona's law requiring voters to prove they are citizens before registering to vote and to show identification before casting ballots. The decision by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the law requiring voters to prove their citizenship while registering is inconsistent with the National Voter Registration Act. That federal law allows voters to fill out a mail-in voter registration card and swear they are citizens under penalty of perjury, but doesn't require them to show proof as Arizona's law does. The ruling left in place a requirement that voters provide proof of identity when casting ballots. Lawyers for several civil rights groups that sued argued thousands of Arizonans have had their federal registration forms rejected because the failed to provide other documents required by the state, in violation of the federal law. The state law in question, Proposition 200, was passed by voters in 2004. It required proof of citizenship during voter registration and of identity at the polls, and also while receiving certain state benefits. It has been upheld by state and federal courts until Tuesday's decision. ********************************************** 4. From Jeff in CA and the Examiner Click link to see the new signs FORWARD FAR AND WIDE! The warning signs posted early this summer in the desert letting visitors know that a major portion of Southern Arizona was under the control of the Mexican Drug Cartels were just unacceptable to some Democrat politicians who apparently demanded they be removed. Liberal, open-border state and Federal officials would rather have dead Americans in the desert than actually confront with appropriate force the armed foreign smugglers and drug cartels operating 70-80 miles inside the U.S. Unbelievable! The citizens of Arizona need to rise up and demand action, not false visitor signs and lame daytime patrols. The tamer BLM signs sparked speculation as to why the Arizona District of Bureau of Land Management decided to make the change. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio put it in plain and simple language; "They were embarrassed." ************************************************ 5. Mass Immigration Comes at the Expense of American Kids, Finds New Report from FAIR Excessive immigration to the United States — both legal and illegal — is harming the interests of Americans in many ways. A new report by FAIR demonstrates how our poorly conceived and poorly enforced immigration policies are harming American school children. Immigration and English Language Learners in Nevada: A Case Study of Clark and Washoe Counties finds that coping with the rapid increase in the number of non-English proficient students is taking a dramatic toll on resources and education quality in one highly affected state. Between 1989 and 2009, the number of students in Nevada public schools classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) grew from 5,173 to 78,732 and now accounts for 18 percent of total enrollment. During the same period, the performance of Nevada schools plummeted, as measured by student performance on standardized tests, and now ranks 50th out of 51 public school systems in the country, surpassing only the District of Columbia. Nevada now spends $730 million a year on LEP education — an average of $9,273 for each non-English proficient student, some 30 percent more than is spent on educating kids who are fluent in English. Those additional resources, plus the time spent by teachers providing special attention to English learners, comes at the expense of the education received by other Nevada school children. A 2009 FAIR study found a similar impact on children in Prince George's County, Maryland. The report provides a case study for why FAIR believes that immigration to the United States must be reduced significantly and our immigration policies dramatically overhauled. Sensible immigration reform must recognize the impact of immigration on American citizens. When, as in the case of school kids in Nevada, immigration is impeding their ability to receive a quality education, policymakers must place citizen interests first. ******************************************** 6. UPDATE: 'Illegal immigrant criminals back on street, thanks to ICE' By: Barbara Hollingsworth Local Opinion Editor 10/20/10 10:40 AM EDT Prince William Board chairman Corey Stewart told The Examiner that a top aide at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted to him that ICE has released more than a half million convicted criminal illegal immigrants back into American communities instead of deporting them. Stewart also says that he is still waiting for information he requested about the whereabouts of some 2,739 criminals convicted in Prince William County since 2007 and sent to ICE for deportation. County police officers have already recaptured 249 of these felons. Here is ICE's response, received after deadline Tuesday: "ICE has been in contact with Virginia law enforcement as well as state and local officials, including Mr. Stewart, on this issue. These officials are aware that ICE is currently in the process of gathering an extensive amount of information in response to their request. "Once this information is compiled, ICE has offered to give a briefing to Mr. Stewart and his colleagues. ICE has also alerted Virginia officials to the fact that any personally identifiable information they have requested about aliens encountered by ICE in Virginia is protected under the Privacy Act and will be redacted from any materials shared by ICE." So the federal agency whose main mission is to enforce federal immigration law is not only releasing convicted criminals who entered the U.S. illegally and victimized American citizens back into local communities, it's now in the business of protecting the "privacy rights" of these felons and refusing to share "personally identifiable information" with duly elected local officials and law enforcement. ********************************************** Ruthie Minnesotans Seeking Immigration Reform State Chapter for FIRE Coalition "Restore Order - Secure Our Border" "The Ruthie Report" 8 pm CST every Thursday via Conservative Alliance Media Network at |
