In the video of the shaper. I just mounted a slab of aluminum that was poured into a bread pan that was extra aluminum from a casting. The pan warps when hot metal is poured in it.
That is the reason for the double cutting sound. The aluminum slab was very untrue. I was just fooling around with the shaper in that video. I had the feed on 3 teeth per stroke I think and about maybe 0.025 or more for the cutting depth and on the slowest speed. I've cut up to 0.050 or better on a pass on aluminum depending on the angle of the bit and the feed rate.
I take it easy on cutting steel one to two teeth movement on the feed and usually about 0.025 depth on the cut. If I take too much of a cut the belt will slip so I haven't worried about breaking the machine if I do all I got to do is make a new part Cutting too deep on steel can make the whole machine shake like a dog trying to pass a razor blade or it will stall and the belt will slip. My shaper seems to do good, I wouldn't sell it and I plan on using it for as many things as I can even if its a lot slower than a mill. The mill I'm building has impressed me on how stout it is being made from aluminum. I did have a problem with spindle head bearing wear at first but I think it just wasn't worn in good as the wear has dropped off to nothing. For what I've got invested in money I couldn't buy either machine.
My most expensive purchase was the cold rolled steel the shaper came in at $72.00 for the steel and the mill was $120.00. My rough estamatie for the machines is around $350.00 to $400.00 for parts includes all the foundry stuff. The good news is I never broke a drill bit or tap so far.Now that I've said that I probably will break every one I have.

Just found your pics and video. Nice machines, beautiful work. And a Much better production rate than I am putting out!! ;D> Congrats!
Rick and I want to know how deep the cut is in shaper video, and the feed rate?
