Thanks for opening my eyes! I just came back from my shop where I was able to cut 0.05" deep with the shaper and probably could have gone deeper. There is some chatter marks in the cut but a finish cut of say 0.005" comes out very smooth.
So, as I have said before, just because I can make a shaper doesn't mean I can run it!

A 5 thou cut in 6061 is nothing. The tool has to be pushed, and there has to be enough inertia and torque to make the metal cut. The beginning of each stroke is like the beginning of the cut on a lathe, the spindle hasto be recieving enough power to not be stoped when the tool is introduced.
