I had that problem too so I padded a band aid with some extra gauze and put it on the finger. It was a bit bulky at first but mashed down after a few minutes and worked well for me. My cut was protected and I could still put pressure on it without the ouch factor! lol Good luck and I hope your friend will be okay, that's such a kind and caring thing to do to help out. : )
