America's Third War: Uncovering Border Tunnels

Scores of trucks pass through Otay Mesa, California, each day, loading and dropping off cargo at various warehouses located just yards from the U.S.-Mexico border.
One warehouse bearing the name "Medi Int Enterprises" -- an alleged storage facility for toilet paper -- seemed to be running business as usual, equipped with a front desk and receptionist. Yet, on Nov. 3, 2010, Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents found they were storing much more than bathroom supplies.
ICE agents intercepted a truck leaving the warehouse and discovered 20,000 pounds of marijuana. An additional 32,000 pounds were found in 10-kilo bricks throughout the warehouse, making it the second largest seizure of marijuana in U.S. history. But, the biggest find was what lurked below.
Agents found 1,800 feet of tunnel running underneath the warehouse to Mexico. Designed with tracks and pulleys, the smuggling tunnel is the most recent to be discovered in a growing number popping up along border states.
Since Sept. 2001, 113 tunnels have been discovered -- a 63 percent increase in just the last two years. ICE agent Tim Durst said they are becoming an increasing threat with the "growing presence of law enforcement above ground."

Conn. high court to hear immigrant benefits case

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The Connecticut Supreme Court will be hearing arguments in a case where state lawmakers voted to end medical benefits for some impoverished legal immigrants.
The justices are set to hear the case Tuesday.
A Hartford Superior Court judge ruled in December 2009 that a state law approved earlier that year violated the constitutional rights of legal immigrants by denying them medical benefits. The state appealed.
Lawmakers approved the legislation to save $9 million from a program serving about 4,800 immigrants who are elderly, disabled or are parents of needy children.
A 1996 federal law barred legal immigrants from receiving Medicaid until they had lived in the country five years. Connecticut had provided medical benefits to legal immigrants who'd been in country less than five years before last year's vote.

Sheriff cites 'promising' Krentz case leads

SIERRA VISTA - Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever told a local audience of recent developments in his ongoing efforts to bring attention to border-related crime and violence. He spoke Wednesday at a monthly meeting of contractors.

During the 30-minute speech and discussion with members of the Southeastern Arizona Contractors Association at Pueblo del Sol Country Club, Dever touched on many topics, including the continuing investigation into the murder of Douglas-area rancher Robert Krentz.

"We have made a ton of progress," he said. "Three days after that murder, I would have bet you a nickel we wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to the shooter. We didn't have anything to go on. We do today."

Without divulging details, he said the inquiry is looking more "promising" than before, but was clear that authorities would not take any action before building a solid case.

"The worst thing we could do would be to put someone in handcuffs, drag them kicking and screaming across the fence, put them in jail and then have to turn them loose," he said. "It's got to be a lock-down case before we prosecute it."

6. Sheriff Joe Arpaio Blasting Christmas Carols to Inmates

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is doing his best to get inmates into the holiday spirit.

From the Washington Times:

The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" in America, Phoenix's Joe Arpaio, who has survived six separate inmate lawsuits trying to stop him from playing Christmas music, will begin playing the tunes again this year - starting Monday with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,""Frosty the Snowman" and "Feliz Navidad."
The 8,000 inmates also will hear, among others, "A Christmas Kwanzaa Solstice," "Over the Skies of Israel," "Ramadan," "Llego a La Ciudad," "Let it Snow" and "Rodolpho El Reno de la Nariz Rojita."
"Maybe the holiday music can help lift the spirits of the men and women who are away from friends and family during the holidays, not just the inmates, but the dedicated men and women who work in the Maricopa County Jails," the sheriff said in an announcement Sunday.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, to which Sheriff Arpaio was first elected in 1992 after a 25-year career at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has played the holiday songs all day, every day, during previous seasons. The latest inmate lawsuit was dismissed in federal court in December 2009.
Sheriff Arpaio has long expressed his fondness for Christmas music, especially "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and anything by Alvin and the Chipmunks, so it was with some glee last year that he announced in a red-and-green press release that the lawsuit had been dismissed and the music would begin.
"We keep winning these lawsuits. Inmates should stop acting like the Grinch who stole Christmas and give up wasting the court's time with such frivolous assertions," the press release read.
Inmates have sued six times claiming that being forced to listen to the Christmas songs 12 hours a day was in violation of their civil and religious rights and a cruel and unusual punishment, but U.S. District Judge Roz Silver disagreed, dismissing the case and denying claims for $250,000 in damages.

Tennessee judge places blame for man killed by drunk illegal alien at Obama's feet

November 23rd, 2010 10:09 pm ET
By Dave Gibson, Immigration Reform Examiner

On November 5, Mexican national, Ramon Neri, 23, admitted to driving drunk and causing the crash that took the life of a father of five, Tika Koirala, on Christmas morning last year.

Neri had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of .16 at the time of the accident.

Neri tried to play upon the court's sympathies, saying that he first walked across the border when he was only 15, ending up in New York in order to help his family. Through an interpreter, he said: "I was the one that was helping them stay afloat financially."

Over the next several years, he went back to Mexico, only to return to this country again. During that time, he was arrested multiple times in both New York and Nashville. Among the arrests, there were several for driving without a license.

The widow of the man he killed, Bhima Koirala, was also in court and told her own story of hardship. She and her husband came to the United States with their five children a year ago from Lilai, a small island near Indonesia. They came here in search of a better life, she said.

Koirala told Judge Mark Fishburn: "Who is going to look after my family and my children? I'm ill-equipped. After my husband's death, I've got so much trouble."

Looking directly at the illegal alien, Koirala said: "I want him punished."

Obviously, fed up with the epidemic of DUI deaths caused by illegal aliens, Judge Fishburn stated: "We have a dead gentlemen with four to five children, and it's because of negligence and total lack of accountability and responsibility of our federal government."

Fishburn also expressed his frustration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, who simply wanted to deport Neri back to Mexico, without any punishment here.

Apparently, over ICE's objections, Judge Fishburn sentenced the illegal alien to eight years behind bars.
