So long as we do not lose any of these gains, we win. We have won, and continue to win no matter the results of the elections. Have you never noticed that we won the abortion war under a republican president and supreme court chief justice? No republican president or congress has managed to stop the slide to freedom that gave us free porn since 2001 and the holy George Bush was appointed to the presidency. I believe it was under Eisenhower that the anti-birth control laws and sodomy laws and the 'no visible means of support' law expired.
The most the current crop of republicans can hope to do is become bigger obstructionists, as nothing becomes law without the signature of the president, and the approval of the senate. They can shut down the government by refusing to approve funding, but they remember that 2008 was in many ways a backlash vote, and we will see-saw again in 2012. Again, it may be more "give them enough rope and they will hang themselves with it" congress.
