[eurofreedom] SOCRATES IN PRISON

Following the disgusting paradigm of infamous Graecokleptocrats, who persecute and jail dissident bloggers, Uncle Ken(UK)jailed a real hero. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange spent the night in London's Wandsworth prison after British judge Howard Riddle yesterday refused to release him on bail on the grounds that he had the means and ability to abscond. Assange is opposing his extradition to Sweden to face false sexual assault charges. A new hearing will be held on 14 December.

Greek dissident bloggers are arrested for exercising the right to free expression and are jailed on grotesque charges, such as treason, after sham trials. Graecokleptocrats are trying to take away Greeks' right to read what they want, and to say what they want. The Internet is making it possible for new voices to be heard, the voices of Greeks who simply could not afford to publish their ideas to a wide audience using the mainstream media. Graecokleptocrats fear new voices, and are trying to control what appears on the Greek blogosphere through new stupid laws and freakish regulations. Freakish Graecocybercops must be abolished now.

False charges against dissident bloggers are very common, especially in Greece. Freakish Graecokleptocrats accuse dissident bloggers of treason, confiscate their computers, and lock them is jail! These prisoners of conscience follow the long tradition of Socrates, who was killed by the Athenian democracy.

Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens, said he would make a new request for Assange's release on bail. Many well-known British figures such as film director Ken Loach offered to stand surety for him. Assange, who is Australian, has meanwhile been receiving consular assistance from his country.

Informal talks are already under way between Washington and Stockholm about Assange's possible extradition from Sweden to face trial on espionage charges in the United States.

Before his arrest, Assange said he had made the necessary arrangements for the WikiLeaks website to continue operating in the event that he was arrested. WikiLeaks continued today to post more U.S. diplomatic cables.

But the site could run out of financial resources as more online payment service providers deny their services to WikiLeaks, cutting it off from donations. After PayPal's decision to suspend the WikiLeaks account, and the closure of Assange's account by the state-owned Swiss bank PostFinance, MasterCard International and Visa Europe announced yesterday they were suspending payments to WikiLeaks. Defending the move, MasterCard said its activities were illegal. Visa Europe said it was examining whether the site's activities violated its operating rules.

A French court yesterday refused to order French Internet company OVH to stop hosting WikiLeaks. The CGIET, the body that oversees the Internet in France, is expected to issue a ruling in the next few days on the technical and legal feasibility of complying with French digital minister Eric Besson's request for the site to be banned.

In a free society, we are supposed to know the truth. In a society where truth becomes treason, however, we are in big trouble. The truth is that our foreign spying, meddling, and outright military intervention in the post-World War II era has made us less secure, not more. And we have lost countless lives and spent trillions of dollars for our trouble. Too often official government lies have provided justification for endless, illegal wars and hundreds of thousands of resulting deaths and casualties.

The neoconservative ethos, steeped in the teaching of Leo Strauss, cannot abide an America where individuals simply pursue their own happy, peaceful, prosperous lives. It cannot abide an America where society centers around family, religion, or civic and social institutions rather than an all powerful central state. There is always an enemy to slay, whether communist or terrorist.

In the neoconservative vision, a constant state of alarm must be fostered among the people to keep them focused on something greater than themselves-- namely their great protector, the state. This is why the neoconservative reaction to the Wikileaks revelations is so predictable: "See, we told you the world was a dangerous place," goes the story. They claim we must prosecute those responsible for publishing the leaks. And we must redouble our efforts to police the world by spying and meddling better, with no more leaks.

We should view the Wikileaks controversy in the larger context of American foreign policy. Rather than worry about the disclosure of embarrassing secrets, we should focus on our delusional foreign policy. We are kidding ourselves when we believe spying, intrigue, and outright military intervention can maintain our international status as a superpower while our domestic economy crumbles in an orgy of debt and monetary debasement.
