beaded web earrings
*disclaimer: this pattern is an altered pattern from the base of a
beaded basket pattern published by Theresa Flores Geary in her book
Native American Beadwork. so I can only take credit for altering it into
an earring pattern
4 colors (optional) of size 11 seed beads
bugle beads (any length size)
size 12 needle
size B beading thread
base row: begin with a ring of 12 beads (start with your lightest color
if you want to make the web have a light color center and gradually work
out to your darker colors). tie them in a circle with a surgeon's knot
or half hitch knot. (for added stability you can add a drop of glue or
clear nail polish to the knot, wait for it to dry before hiding the knot
inside the next bead on the base row)
row 2: add 3 beads (next color) to every other bead in the base row,
which will give 6 points to your second row.
row 3: move your needle to the peak bead (of row 2) by passing it
through 2 beads; the peak bead is the middle one. Add 5 beads (next
color) from peak to peak all the way around the ring. at the end of each
row, tie a half-hitch knot and pass your needle to the peak bead.
final row: add 7 beads (last color) from peak to peak, all the way
around the circle. tie a half-hitch knot at the end of this row to keep
the tension taught. you can also go around the final row of beads one
more time with your thread for extra stability.
beaded loop: move the needle up to one of the peak beads of the final
row and string 10 beads (of that row's color) and form a loop going back
through the peak bead; run through the beaded loop one more time with
your thread.
beaded fringe: (this can vary on how many strands of beaded fringe you
want at the base of the web)
run your needle and thread to the opposite side of the web from the
beaded loop and begin stringing beads for the first strand of fringe:
in the pink web earring the sequence I used went: 3 darkest pink seed
bead, 2 pink beads, 1 light pink bead, 1 white bead, 1 bugle bead, 1
white bead, 1 light pink bead, 2 pink beads, 3 dark pink beads 1 light
pink bead and 3 dark pink beads. the last 3 beads will form the end
cluster of the fringe, run your needle through the 1 light pink bead
that came before the final 3 beads. keep going up the strand of beads
back up to the outer row of the beaded web and pass your needle into the
next bead to begin your next strand of beaded fringe.
(the color sequence and length is completely up to you as well. you can
even do a beaded fringe using only bugle beads with just 3 or 4 seed
beads at the end if you prefer.)
