Hi-
I tend to tear up the tool steel cutter edges on my castings when turning the
surfaces due to sand inclusions and i have noticed the surfaces seem harde
somtimes thatn the middle I assume due to chilling rate at the surface when it
cools? I havent really broken any cutters off but have hung up and lathe belt
slipped and saved cutter. I leave the belt a little loose to help avoid major
damage.
I do have some carbide tip cutters and I try to use them to rough machine the
cast surfaces then switch to the tool steel cutters to cut the clean stuff. it
seems to save wear and tear on the tool steel cutters.
Regards
Bradley

I sure have! On one occasion I overheated the melt but decided to pour
anyway. The casting was impossible to turn on my lathe and I ended up
remelting it. All of my other castings were easy to machine.
