Rick try using some jelutong
http://www.woodbin.com/ref/wood/jelutong.htm
I've used it, better than pine for most pattern work and doesn't have the problems of mdf.
Mdf is cheap in the short term, long term it could be very expensive.

Dave,
Well, I do take a few precautions including wearing wrap around safety glasses and doing all of my sawing outside. Can't say that I wear a respirator. I do see molten aluminum of more of an immediate threat. I am allergic to pine sawdust so prefer to avoid that stuff.

please read the msds before using mdf material. I won't use it.
Most MDF is made with resins that contain formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen, according to the ebuild website. When sawing MDF boards with power tools, a fine dust is generated. You should always wear a respirator to avoid inhaling the dust, as well as side-shield safety glasses.
