"Larry's scratch built lathe" in the files section shows a bolted together lathe. I believe he used a square piece of steel for the bed.
When I was thinking about building the lathe I looked into square tubing. The type I found had the corners rounded over. For a 3" tubing there was only about 2" of flat on each side.
Perhaps a better alternative is to bolt together 3 pieces of CRS in an "H" shape. The ways would then be bolted on top of the legs of the H. There would be far less scraping as you would only have to do the top of the legs.
In the end I gave up the whole idea and bought a used lathe. I did build the shaper though.
