I have not built the lathe. I have built the shaper.
I also built my own horizontal milling machine, but not the Gingery type.
I used 4" square tubing for the column. It is very rigid, but it has some real
drawbacks. Since it is structural steel, and not manufacturing steel, it has
no need to be precise in its size, or structure. On my steel tube, the sides are
all concave. It was way beyond scraping. I had to mill a flat on it to accept the
vertical slide plate. I have a pic of it in my photos. You cant tell it from the photo,
but the part in the center that is uncut is almost 1/16" low.
So, unless you have access to a mill to create a flat where none exists, I
believe a casting would serve you better.
