Arizona Attorney General Attacks Tucson Minority Studies
January 3rd, 2011 Racism in Arizona reaches new heights as the new Attorney General continues his grudge against the Mexican-American Studies program in Tucson. He has declared the program to be illegal and now plans to enforce the new anti-minority studies law. This is overt racism.

New Ariz. AG nixes Mexican-American studies program

Newly elected Attorney General Tom Horne acknowledges the crowd at an election night party in Phoenix in November. Arizona's outgoing state school superintendent — who is also the new attorney general — says Tucson's Mexican-American studies program violates a new state law on ethnic-studies, The Arizona Republic reports.

Tom Horne, who is releasing his 10-page finding today, says the classes violate the law aimed at programs designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group "and it's got to stop."

If school officials refuse, Horne says, they should lose 10% of their state funding, as allowed under the law.

Tucson school district officials plan to appeal the findings, the newspaper says.

The new law prohibits classes aimed at certain ethnic groups, as well as classes that advocate overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment toward a race or class or people, or advocate ethnic solidarity.

Horne notes that the percentage of Latinos enrolled is greater than the overall percentage of Latino students in schools that offer the classes, the newspaper says.

That and an explanation of the program's goal of "increased academic achievement for Latino students" are enough to violate the law, he says.

Tucson School Superintendent John Pedicone says the course covers injustice and oppression committed against Mexicans, just as African-American history includes slavery.

He says internal studies indicate that students who took the program were more than twice as likely to graduate and three times as likely to go on to college.

Horne disputes the studies' methodology and maintains that the classes provoke racism, encourage students to see themselves as oppressed and foment anti-social behavior, the Republic reports.

Arizona limits ethnic studies in public schools By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) — Fresh on the heels of a new immigration law that has led to calls to boycott her state, Arizona's governor has signed a bill banning ethnic studies classes that "promote resentment" of other racial groups.

Gov. Jan Brewer approved the measure without public statement Tuesday, according to state legislative records. The new law forbids elementary or secondary schools to teach classes that are "designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group" and advocate "the overthrow of the United States government" or "resentment toward a race or class of people."

The bill was pushed by state school Superintendent Tom Horne, who has spent two years trying to get Tucson schools to drop a Mexican-American studies program he said teaches Latino students they are an oppressed minority. There was no immediate response from the Tucson Unified School District, the law's main target.

Horne pulls trigger on Tucson's minority students and TUSD Ethnic Studies
by Three Sonorans on Jan. 03, 2011

Tom Horne's target is Ethnic Studies, not compliance with the law.
Tom Horne has found TUSD in non-compliance with HB2281 at his press conference today in Phoenix.

It was his last act in office, and the culmination of a personal vendetta that began years ago. Now as the Attorney General, he gets the entire resources of that office to defend HB2281.

11 Ethnic Studies teachers will have a press conference at 11:30 in Tucson to discuss their lawsuit against Huppenthal, since Tom Horne is old news now, a bitter old man who gets his kicks off of attacking minority kids, beating them up and smiling. He is a perfect symbol of the hate in Arizona today.
