The way the cold war was conducted has infuriated hundreds of millions of people and turned them into our enemies. That has undone everything positive that the government has done for the defense of this nation. The way each government tries to provide for the welfare of its subjects may have always done more harm than good. Each government uses violence and a threat of violence to achieve its goals. Both violence and the threat of violence have always done more harm than good. There have always been much better options.
