Radical Muslim imam captured at US-Mexico border

U.S. Border Patrol agents captured a radical Muslim cleric attempting to sneak into the United States across the California-Mexican border this morning.
Said Jaziri was discovered hiding in a Mexican registered BMW. The terrorism supporting cleric has been banned from France and Canada, as well as the United States, police sources told the Law Enforcement Examiner.
Jaziri, who gained notoriety when he ordered his followers to "execute" the controversial Danish cartoonist who drew pictures of the prophet Mohammed, was arrested, as was the BMW's driver Kenneth Robert Lawler.
Jaziri, 44, had been deported from Canada to Tunisia in 2007 after Canadian immigration officials discovered that he had fabricated statements on his refugee application. Prior to that he had been imprisoned in France on terrorism-related charges

Three Illegal Immigrants Accused in Death of American Teen Surrender in Arizona

Three Mexican men who were wanted for the murder of an American teenager have turned themselves in at an Arizona border crossing point, Reuters reports.

U.S. officers tell Reuters that Orel Vasquez, 20, Christian Vasquez, 26, and Juan Leon, 29, turned themselves in Saturday for the 2009 murder of 15-year-old Brenda Arenas of Tucson.

Arenas was shot in the head during a botched carjacking and died in her mother's arms.

The U.S. Customs and Borders Protection agency took the three into custody.

All three men were in the U.S. illegally.

PLEASANTON -- A Pleasanton university that catered to mostly online students is being called a sham by federal prosecutors who say the university was a front to illegally provide immigration status to foreign nationals.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Wednesday were at the Tri-Valley University campus on Boulder Court in Pleasanton and executed search warrants at three other properties owned by school founder Susan Su, including one in the gated Ruby Hill community.
The complaint, filed by the U.S. District Attorney's Office on Wednesday, claims Su was part of an elaborate scheme to defraud, using false statements and misrepresentations to the Department of Homeland Security.
"Since its inception ... Tri-Valley University has been a sham university, which Su, and others, have used to facilitate foreign nationals in illegally acquiring student immigration status that authorizes them to remain in the United States," the complaint reads.
According to the complaint, Su and Tri-Valley University have made millions of dollars in tuition fees for issuing the visa-related documents, enabling foreign nationals to obtain illegal student immigration status.
Calls to Tri-Valley University were not returned.

Immigration Sweep Nets 83 Arrests in 2 Days

PHOENIX –  The office of an Arizona sheriff known for his efforts against illegal immigrants has arrested 83 people during a two-day crime sweep targeting illegal immigrants.

Of those arrested, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Saturday that 68 were illegal immigrants. Those who were not illegal immigrants were arrested for crimes including drug possession and theft.

The sheriff's office seized 725 pounds (330 kilograms) of marijuana and some methamphetamine during the operation, which ended Friday. It was the office's 18th such sweep.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his office's 17 previous sweeps resulted in more than 1,000 arrests. He says a recent rise in the number of human smuggling arrests prompted another sweep

On Thursday, Norma Paola Vera-Nolasco, 31, was arrested at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, as she attempted to flee to Mexico. In fact, her U.S. Airways flight had already pulled away from the gate when police ordered it to return.
According to the Denver's District Attorney's office, Vera-Nolasko was driving the truck that hit and killed valet, Jose Medina outside a Denver nightclub on Saturday night.
She faces two counts of vehicular homicide, criminal impersonation, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Prosecutors say that the illegal alien was drunk at the time of the accident.
In 2008, Vera-Nolasco was arrested in Aurora, Colorado, for driving without a license, but due to Aurora's sanctuary policy, was released without being reported to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
On Tuesday, Denver police arrested Eliu Montes-Garcia, 28, who was in the vehicle with Vera-Nolasco. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, vehicular homicide, and two counts of accessory to crime.
Montes-Garcia has a history of arrests for various traffic and drug violations and was deported in 2008.

PHOENIX - State and federal authorities have busted a drop house in west Phoenix and taken 55 suspected illegal immigrants into custody.
They say at least three of the people are suspected human smugglers.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials received a tip about a possible drop house in the 11000 block of West Roma. They busted into the home about 2 p.m. Friday and say they found 48 men and seven women inside.
Authorities say almost all of the 55 people are adults and most are from Central America and Mexico.
DPS officials say the illegal immigrants arrived at the drop house recently. They all have been turned over to ICE officials.

Mexican town's cops quit after colleagues beheaded

MONTERREY, Mexico –  The police chief and all 38 police officers of a northeastern Mexican town have quit following a series of drug cartel attacks, including the decapitation of two of their colleagues.

Soldiers, state and federal police had been deployed to patrol General Teran, a town along a notorious drug-smuggling route to the U.S. border, said Mayor Ramon Villagomez.

The police quit after the discovery Wednesday of the mutilated bodies of two officers who had been kidnapped by gunmen two days earlier.

The killings followed three attacks on the police headquarters since December. Gunmen hurled grenades and sprayed the building with machine-gun fire.

Villagomez said another police officer has been missing for weeks in the town of 14,500 people southwest of the industrial city of Monterrey.
