I take your point about the printed as opposed to the spoken word, but it's
always going to be a matter of personal interpretation however hard the
writer tries to get their tone and meaning across - what one person reads as
direct, rude, or abrupt, another reads as unambiguous and straight forward.
As even speaking face to face isn't foolproof at avoiding offence (if it was
there would be no arguments or wars!) it's almost impossible to write
anything, even with no malice intended, that somebody, somewhere won't
manage to take offence at.
