I can understand that, something you can get off the local market.
CRS might work fine,it is smoother than HRS , there is no scale on it.
A true machist straght edge are thick ,but with like a knife edge.
They are about 3/8 thick x3-4in wide with one edge machined to
a taper to 1/8in or less.The thin edge is trued up.

My goal here is to try to make it from metal found at Ace Hardware or Home Depot. If the strap I bought doesn't work, I would certainly save a lot of time and effort by just ordering ground flat stock.

I was thinking more about the toolsteel flat ground stock,for a stright edge.
Most of it is not off that much to start with.
