Ron,

Although I own these calipers, I have to admit that I've never thought about
using them for metal working either. Yet it does make sense when you just
want to things to fit together.

I was expecting a different kind of caliper. I never use that type. I
thought they were more for wood working, like turning.
I use dial and digital calipers along with my micrometers for really
finicky work.
