Hello, Dick,
Oops. Thermal shock isn't the problem. I should have said thermal
cycling. I just read a web page that suggests that resistive elements
should never be turned off for the life of the equipment! Pretty
informative site about the care and feeding of heating elements:

Dick, you were very kind to suggest I used poetic license. It wasn't
license; I was flatly wrong and needed to be corrected.
Regards,
Mr. Shannon DeWolfe
--I've taken to using Mr. because my name misleads folks on the WWW. I am a 54 year old fat man.
