Senator examines gun claim in border shootout

A U.S. senator is examining a claim that two guns sold in purchases sanctioned by federal firearms agents were later used in a December shootout that left a Border Patrol agent dead near the Arizona-Mexico border.
Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa said in a letter provided Monday to The Associated Press he had received information that appears to partially corroborate the claim received by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about the guns.
"Members of the Judiciary Committee have received numerous allegations that the ATF sanctioned the sale of hundreds of assault weapons to suspected straw buyers, who then allegedly transported these weapons throughout the Southwest border area and into Mexico," reads a letter sent Thursday from Grassley to Kenneth Melson, acting director of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Illegal alien stole U.S. Marine's identity, ran up debts
On Wednesday, Inocente Monroy Alcantara, 26, was sentenced to one year in federal prison for using a stolen identity to work at a Kansas meat packing plant. The native of Guatemala had hoped to prove he should be granted permanent residency in the United States. His evidence included letters from his five children, including his Marine son, who has been expected to be deployed to Afghanistan. But immigration and customs spokeswoman Gail Montenegro said the case was not subject to review because Andres had illegally re-entered this country after having been deported before

The attacked happened near Los Arrieros in Starr County just after 12 p.m. on Monday. Sources told Action 4 News that the man was swimming across the border when gunmen from the Mexican side opened fire on him. A motive is not clear but the man survived the attack and is talking with authorities. The man's identity has not but released but investigators said he's an illegal immigrant. Authorities confirmed that he's being treated at McAllen Medical Center. Los Arrieros is on the Rio Grande off U.S. Highway 83 ten miles northwest of Roma-Los Saenz in western Starr County. Action 4 News will post more information as it becomes available.
