Hi,
We used slide hammers for removing threaded metal dowels. The principle was
similar to your vice but no milling was involved.A bar was threaded about 40mm
and blind caps were turned to fit ,the base being drilled to be a clearance on
different thread sizes. The resulting tool could be used to hold screws to grind
tapers by hand. The next mod was to use it in a lathe chuck.Care had to be taken
but it was possible to do light machining.

Hi Rick
It gives me an excuse to make a milling machine.

Keith,
With a small change in the design, you can do it all on the lathe. Just skip the
end mill work. You will have to drop the screw in the hole rather than slide it
in from the side but the rest is the same. This change is a good way to go when
you get to screws smaller than 6-32 because it is hard to find end mills smaller
than about 0.1" in diameter.

Hi Rick
That looks like a good idea for holding small screws.
I guess I need tomake a Milling machine to make the parts.

This article is another in my series of "newbie" projects although
experienced machinists may find value in the design.
The vise clamps a #6 or #8 screw such that it's end can be easily and safely
beveled on a grinding wheel. The vise is similar to a pin vise except that
it grabs the head and body.
