My friend and I built our shapers in about 03. It was a good lesson in pattern making
for both of us. There is a lot involved in quality pattern making.
But in hindsight, if the patterns were available then, I would have bought them, even for the $150 price for the ebay castings. Mainly to get the machine built quicker.
Just a word to anyone that has never done this before- The better the pattern, the better
the finished casting. You will only get castings that are exactly like your patterns.
So if the patterns arrive with any messy radii, or cracks in the filler
used in corners, you would do well to make all that as smooth as possible before you
do all the work of pouring the metal. A couple hours of going over every inch of the patterns may be time well spent. A keen eye is good, but you can tell a lot about a pattern with just your hands.
If it doesn't feel good, it probably isn't good.
