About the film: Venezuela has a long and tumultuous history of struggle over land, dating back to the colonization of indigenous lands by Europeans. More recently, the Venezuelan countryside has been characterized by extreme inequalities in land ownership, with the much of the land concentrated in the hands of a few and the majority of peasant families without land. A decade ago, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez passed a radical new agrarian reform law giving peasants a legal framework to reclaim idle and underused land. This ignited a new wave of violence that has led to the widespread assassination of landless farmers. This film is about the struggle of peasants in Venezuela to defend their rights as they struggle for food sovereignty. Sponsored by: Alberto Lovera Bolivarian Circle of NY.
