LA CROSSE, Wis. - La Crosse democrats have filed the first petition to recall one of the 19 targeted Wisconsin senators .
Volunteers from the Committee to Recall Senator Dan Kapanke traveled to Madison Friday and hand delivered the signatures.
Area democrats say they collected well over the 15,588 signatures required to recall Sen. Kapanke.
The committee working to recall the senator had 60 days to collect enough signatures. They say they've collected more than that in less than 30 days.
A rally outside of La Crosse City Hall Friday sent a group of recall volunteers on their way to Madison, where they were the first to deliver more than 20,000 petition signatures.
"There really was a sense of urgency here. Not just for public servants, but for people who have children with special needs and funding is going to be cut off. Or people have their grandparents in a nursing home and they're worried about senior care, or education. All of those things really created a sense of urgency. I think we got that pretty quick here and we were ready to activate, which we did," said Richelle Zimmerman.
Recall organizer Pat Scheller of La Crosse says he never expected the signatures to be collected this fast and credits everyone involved for the quick success.
"I give credit to those people who stood on the corners and took the jeers and the cheers. Because there was a lot of jeers and it was a tough thing to do. But, they stuck it out and we got more than we needed," said Scheller.
Scheller says delivering the signatures is rewarding, "It's nice to know that votes count, not money. There's a lot of money out there, but there's still a lot of people there and every person has one vote and that's what counts."
Committee volunteers say even though signatures are delivered, they don't expect the effort to die.
"People are still very much involved and want to be involved and so we're allowing them to still be involved in other efforts which is moving forward with the election as well as the potential recall of Governor Walker," said Zimmerman.
Friday's filing starts a 31 day review process by the Government Accountability Board.
In response to what's happening, Sen. Kapanke says this is part of the political process and is something he anticipated would happen at some point, he just didn't know when.
He says he's mentally prepared and has been working at a recall campaign for quite some time.
