Well here is the other way around.
Untill about 4 or 5 years agot the police weapon was still the Walther P38 9mm.
Now they have Glocks that most of them never had the chance to shoot.
About 2 month ago a police officer shot a car bugler in a runaway car thar refused to stop after beeing requested. The buglar was a rap singer. The police officer said in his defense that he didn't mean to kill anyone because he had never made a shot with his gun. he had no ideia of the bullet trajectory, he didn't even know if the gun's sigth were properly set. The trial is beeing followed by the press, with most people asking for the police officer's head.
Me, I prefer not to say my opinion.....

When I was in "pre-training" for police school, they specifically said. If you don't have a gun now, get one. Then shoot it until it breaks.
We want you so fast that you are actually pushing the gun back down after each firing.
The suggestion was to fire at least 500 rounds a week in at least one semi-auto firearm.
All of this was wanted before official training.
Some of the swat guys in group shooting would fill 5 gallon buckets of spent brass in a single session.
The idea as explained by a pro was that it doesn't take too long to hit what you are aiming at.
But it takes an amazing amount of practice to learn to delay that microsecond, to NOT shoot a friendly. In other words when you are super confident you can hit a target in the blink of an eye, you are actually in less of a hurry to shoot at all.
In stark contrast I've seen benchrest shooters spend 15minutes computing the ballistics, reloading a round, and worrying about that last 16th of an inch on the target. And using less than 30 rounds in all day practice.
