As a Design and Technology teacher I am currently doing a jewellery project with my year 8 students casting low melting point pewter using a variety of moulds such as MDF, plaster of paris, sea shells, lost wax castings etc. I have found it to be very educational, I'm not so sure about the kids.
> I find aluminium casting much more fun but probably too dangerous to let the kids loose on it.
I'm a retired technology (industrial arts or shop) teacher (grades 7-12). My students gned and desimade patterns, flasks, and rammed molds. They never did more than observe (at safe distance) pouring. The risks out weighed the educational value, in my opinion.
