Anthony,
If you are following the build of a Gingery design furnace he used a steel band and strung wire much like a bike wheel to hold in the refractory. Cracks depending on how large can be patched or smoothed ove with a bit of refractory wetted more than you did for ramming the furnace and applied with a paint brush or trowel. If the crack is hair line or there abouts ITC-100 is a great way to seal them and also apply a reflective coating. I suspect your not reading the gingery books on your build and relying on what you read or see on the net?
My advice is get the books! Also available Mike Porters book -'Burners for furnaces, forge and kilns'
Wonk
