An experiment was performed by Michael Persinger, he is a neuroscientist
who was interested in manipulating brain waves to create a divine
experience, or "a sensed presence." He created a "helmet" that would
send low-level magnetic fields through the temporal lobes of his
volunteers, he would switch sides of the brain to heighten the
transcendent and occasionally terrifying nature of the experience.

> During the experiment some of his volunteers had explained seeing
Jesus, the virgin Mary, Muhammad, monks, the Sky Spirit and even some
people had out-of-body experiences. But not all the volunteers had a
"divine" experience. Persinger found that other volunteers had seen
aliens, satanic rituals, satan and some claimed to be abducted by
aliens. One of the volunteers had such a terrifying experience he tore
off the helmet and ran from the room, having claimed to see a huge set
of eyes and smelling burning sulfur.

> At the end of the experiment, Persinger found that the sensitivity of
the amygdala of the left brain compared with the right brain would be
the determining factor with regard to the experience. He found that
when he sent the magnetic waves, that if a volunteer had a more
sensitive "left amygdala" that the volunteer would experience "heaven."
However, if the volunteer had a more sensitive "right amygdala" that
they would experience hell.

> Another interesting factor explained was that the nature of the
experience depended on the participant's individual history. Negative
early life experiences tend to increase the sensitivity of the right
temporal lobe and when stimulated brought about a hellish experience.
However those with a happier childhood had a more sensitive left
temporal lobe and would expeirence a sense of the divine.

> A human's sense of self and sense of "the other" are housed in both
temporal lobes, but primarily in the left hemisphere where the language
centers are located. For a person to function normally the left and
right temporal lobes must work in harmony and if something upsets this
balance then the brain will sense another "self" and could create
hallucinations. What he found was that EMF frequencies would upset the
balance.

> These electromagnetic frequencies are also found to increase around
the earth, especially around shifting fault lines. Persinger also
believes that mass sightings of lights in the sky and apparitions of the
virgin mary are possibly related to these electromagnetic frequencies
from the earth.

> On a more personal note, I have visited the Mrytles Plantation in St.
Francisville, Louisiana and I found that it seemed "haunted." I had so
many strange experiences there, but when I left I had a premonition that
it had something to do with seismic activity. But I didn't even know
that there were fault lines running through Louisiana. I checked into
it and found that there is a fault line running right near this area of
the plantation.
