Interesting to watch Obummer putter and stutter and bumble his way round the world without so much as a critical word or drop of ink from the big media on his crushing failures. Obama has succeeded in alienating all of our closest allies while getting a kick in the teeth from our enemies, who took advantage of his anti-Americanism (i.e. Russia, the Muslim world, the Philistines in Gaza, etc.).
Obama's failed foreign policy is .......... in a word? A disaster.
I am sure you did not hear from the media that Lech Walesa, Former President of Poland, our greatest Eastern European ally, refused to take a meeting with O. You had to search long and hard to find this piece of monumental news -- page two of this AP article -- last paragraph:
Former Polish president Lech Walesa also declined to meet Obama, explaining it would be nothing more than a "photo opportunity."
After Obama demands that the Jews relocate to "Auschwitz Borders," the Muslim world declares victory:
The Arab League has snubbed U.S. President Barack Obama and officially abandoned the path of "negotiations" with Israel for creating a Palestinian Authority state and will ask the United Nations to do so.
[Russian President] Medvedev said on Thursday that it will take until 2020 to finally resolve the issue of anti-missile defense, saying that he and President Barack Obama are laying the foundation for future politicians to resolve the matter.
Medvedev said the political "motivation and impetus" for that needed to be in place before an accord could be reached.
In other words, Obama left with just his stick in his hand.

The OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference), the organization largely driving the UN and the movement to ban free speech worldwide, issued its fatwa on Islamic misogyny, gender apartheid, subjugation and oppression of women in 2009. Thanks much to Mark Durie, who translated it for us:
In April 2009, the Islamic Fiqh Academy made a ruling entitled 'Domestic Violence'.  This is a highly significant document which reflects a high-level consensus of leading Muslim scholars in the world today. It was clearly issued in the context of criticisms of Islam and Muslim societies for the treatment of women.
The Islamic Fiqh Academy (IFA) was established by the Organization for the Islamic Conference in 1981. It is comprised of 43 scholars, who are elite Islamic jurists of their respective nations. Many are chief justices or grand muftis of their nations.  IFA's resolutions are in Arabic, and they can be found on their website at http://www.fiqhacademy.org.sa/.
IFA's aims are:
  • to unite the Ummah (the global Muslim community, conceived of as a single nation, by conforming conduct to the norms of Islam at all levels (from individual to international);
  • to apply Islam to contemporary problems;
  • and to create a body of Islamic jurisprudence to meet the needs of modern life.
In IFA's deliberations, issues are subjected to extensive research, with prior distribution of papers, extensive consultation and discussion, before rulings are agreed upon and issued.  These rulings are very distilled.  The process "allows for a Muslim to see the final opinion without having to use up time and effort considering the research consultations that may extend to hundreds of pages".
Undoubtedly IFA speaks for the Islamic mainstream.  In the words of Dr Abdul-Salam Al-Abbadi,  Secretary General of IFA, it is intended to function as the 'supreme juristic reference for the Muslim world'.  Furthermore, IFA's rulings have the backing of the OIC, which is one of the most significant groupings of states in the world today.
IFA's fatwa or ruling on domestic violence warrants detailed study.  It is not possible to do justice to it in this blog post.  A translation into English is given below.  A few key features are:
  1. This fatwa represents the unapologetic assertion of the absolute authority of the sharia over all understandings of human rights as they apply to women and the family, specifically including international human rights conventions and covenants.  Islamic states are instructed to ignore every article of any convention or covenant which is inconsistent with the sharia.
  2. The fatwa upholds the right of a husband to beat his wife: wife-beating is specifically excluded from its definition of 'domestic violence', as long as the beating conforms to sharia requirements.  The memorable phrase 'non-violent beating' is coined to express this perspective.  Note also the implied threat which warns against 'slander' in the context of resolving marital disputes (implying that a woman must not criticize her husband).
Here are some hadiths of Muhammad on wife-beating from Sunan Abu Dawud:
Muhammad: 'When one of you inflicts a beating, he should avoid beating the face.'
    • Muhammad: "A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife."  – this principle means that a man cannot required to answer to a sharia court for beating his wife.
    • Muhammad: "Do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl."
    • Muhammad: "They are not the best among you." – said of women who complained to Muhammad when he gave permission for their husbands to beat them.
  3. This fatwa also upholds the right of a husband to rape his wife, for it is not 'domestic violence' for a man to insist upon his conjugal rights (section 2(F)).  The key term ihsan 'preservation' is very difficult to translate into English.  It is derived from the root h.s.n which means to fortify or make something inaccessible by building a fortified wall around it.  A 'fortified' woman is a married woman who has a husband to protect her. He also has conjugal rights over her (as she is kept inside his fortress).  The meaning of ihsan is defined by Lane as: 'With the lawyers, ihsan means the act of coitus conjugalis in a case of valid marriage.'  This fatwa is written in legal language, so what 2(F) is saying is that it is not domestic violence for a Muslim man to 'fortress' his wife, and force her to have sex with him, even if she is unwilling.
  4. The fatwa also upholds the right of a male guardian to contract the marriage of a virgin female (2(H)): he has the right to marry her to another.  Muhammad said that a virgin gives permission to a marriage 'by her silence': in practice this often means the guardian has the sole say over who she will marry.
  5. The fatwa also implicitly upholds the sharia's laws concerning the treatment of adulterers (2(A)).
  6. The fatwa endorses a husband's guardianship over his wife: this means that he legally controls her in many respects.
  7. There is implacable opposition to principles of equality between the sexes.
  8. The right of women to move around freely in public without a supervising male is rejected as contrary to sharia law.
  9. The fatwa upholds sharia law's non-reciprocal approach to divorce, which make it easy for man to divorce his wife, but very difficult for a women to obtain a divorce, except through a difficult legal process. (In fact Arabic has two different words for these: a divorce initiated by a man, and one initiated by a woman are regarded as two quite different things.)  If a man divorces his wife, this is halal 'permitted' - although disprefered – but if a woman divorces her husband without "just cause", this is a mortal sin:
    • Muhammad said: "If any woman asks her husband for divorce without some strong reason, the odor of Paradise will be forbidden to her." (Sunan Abu Dawud).
  10. This fatwa implicitly upholds many other aspects of sharia law which are opposed to women's rights.  An example is the rule that if a woman sues for divorce for excessive beatings, she must return the brideprice he paid for her (i.e. she must pay him to win her divorce). Another is the shockingly humiliating law that a woman irrevocably divorced by her husband can only remarry him after she has married another, had sexual relations with the new husband, and been divorced by him (or he dies first).  These regulations, and the way in which they work to deny women basic rights of safety and equality before the law have been well-documented by others and can be found in Islamic legal texts, but deserved to be better known.  This fatwa upholds such conservative time-honored principles of sharia law without conceding an inch to modern understandings of human dignity or human rights.
I find it quite incredible that this fatwa has been in circulation in Arabic for two years, and it is backed by the most eminent and credible of Muslim jurists, yet western human rights activists and feminist scholars appear to have paid it no attention whatsoever.

Does the status in sharia law of hundreds of millions of Muslim women attract such little interest?!  Are the intellectuals of the West really so morally depraved?  Do our silences not tell the truth about who we are?  Have we really become so heartless and cruel?  I  would warmly welcome any information which could lead me to revise this assessment for the better.  (Suggested improvements to the translation from Arabic are also warmly welcomed.)

Domestic violence.
The Council of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, an offshoot of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, held its nineteenth session in the Emirate of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) from 1-5 Jamadi I, 1430 AH (April 26-30, 2009).
After reviewing the research brought to its attention on the subject of domestic violence, and after listening to discussions on the the subject, and after considering established religious principles for the necessity of establishing the family on the great basis of affection and love, and the provision of legislation which achieves stability and tranquility, and considering that deviations from this approach spread violence in the family, [the Council] have decided the following:
1. the concept of domestic violence
What is meant by violence is acts or words of violence committed by a family member against another member of the same family, which are characterized by severity and cruelty causing physical or mental harm to the family or one of its members, such conduct being prohibited [haram] because it contravenes the objectives of Sharia law for the protection of the soul and mind, and because it contradicts the Lord's order, which is based on kindness and righteousness in relationships.
2. [the following] are not considered to be violence or discrimination from the Islamic perspective:
(A)   Adherance  to sharia rulings governing marital relationships, and the prohibition of illicit conjugal unions.
(B)   Denying access to contraceptives for illegally married couples.
(C)  The prohibition of abortion, except in exceptional medical cases determined by  the sharia.
(D)  The criminalization of homosexuality.
(E)   A husband forbidding his wife from travelling alone, except with his permission and in accordance with the sharia.
(F)  The legal Islamic right of husband and wife to abstain from evil and "preservation" (ihsan), even if one of them is unwilling.
(G) The women's primary role in caring for children and the family home, and the husband's responsibility of stewardship [i.e. maintenance and guardianship].
(H) Legal guardianship over a virgin female in (entering into a contract for her) marriage.
(I)   What the shari's has established regarding the division of inheritance and wills.
(J)   Legal divorce in accordance with the shari'a.
(K) Polygamy based on justice.
3. The Islamic approach of settling marital disputes
When settling marital disputes, especially regarding a disobedient wife who has exalted herself against her husband [i.e. she disobeys him] the following Islamic legal standards are to be observed:
(A)    Avoid insults, defamation and slander.
(B)    Follow the sharia in dealing with the wife, commencing with preaching [admonishing her], then [sexual] abandonment [of the wife], and ending with non-violent beating, which [can be defined as] almost waving it without doing it. To resort to [beating] is the opposite of what is preferred, for [Muhammad] said: "those of you who are the best, shall not beat", and [one should] follow the example of his action, that he did not ever beat a woman.
(C)    Resort to the judgment of two people when the dispute is exacerbated.
(D)   Resort to the divorce system in accordance with rules established by sharia regulations (for revocable divorce, major or minor irrevocable divorce, and times of its occurrence), and regarding it as the worst of the halal [what is permitted] from Allah.

4. The council determines as follows

(A)    At the level of the family:
                          i.         Focus on bringing up children in a faith-based manner, as a pathway for nurturing them socially;
ii.         Emphasize established rules of the sharia related to the construction of the family, such as cooperation, affection, compassion, kindness, righteousness, and kindness between the spouses.
iii.         Adopt dialogue to resolve internal family issues.
(B)    At the level of official institutions and departments:
                         i.         Hold periodic workshops to raise the awareness of families about the risks of violence, and to establish the dialogue approach.
ii.         Require educational institutions to teach [material which] addresses issues of domestic violence in its various forms and manifestations.
iii.         Coordinate between relevant ministries and departments to adopt a unified and consistent policy, to preserve the fundamental principles of the nation [ummah] in the face of the westernizing trends aimed at the family.
iv.         Provide guidance for the media to assume its responsibilities in a framework for the right path to social development.
(C)    At the level of Muslim countries:
                          i.         It is necessary to submit all international conventions regarding women and children, as well as draft laws, to sharia specialists and legal scholars, before they are issued and signed into law.  [They are] to be weighed against the sharia: what conflicts with the provisions and purposes of the sharia is to be rejected. It is necessary to call upon Islamic governments to review agreements that have been signed, to identify articles which are inconsistent with the sharia, and to reject those articles, without negating positive aspects which do not contradict the sharia.
ii.         Reject any articles of international agreements and conventions which are contrary to the provisions of sharia law: [such as] call for the abolition of innate differences between the roles of men and women in society and advocate for full equality between male and female in all degrees of inheritance, and abuse the divorce system in the Islamic sharia, calling for the abolition of supremacy of men over the family, and other things which are established in the Islamic sharia.
iii.         Reject all clauses contained in agreements which permit the violation of  Islamic laws and natural instincts, such as allowing same sex marriage and sexual relations outside of a legal marrage, and mixing [of the sexes] in a way which is legally prohibited, and other clauses which contradict the provisions of the Islamic sharia.
iv.         Call upon all legislative bodies to enact laws that criminalize all forms of violence between family members, on the grounds that sharia law has forbidden such acts.
                         v.         Limit executive authority to the relevant judicial authorities.
vi.         Emphasize a commitment to preserve the specifics of Islamic culture and sharia rulings, and respect the reservations of Muslim governments and their representatives concerning clauses which contradict Islamic law in covenants and conventions related to the family.
vii.         Form a committee to prepare a code to regulate the rights and duties of members of the family, which will lead to the drafting of a Family Law Code compatible with Islamic law.

Taliban gunmen have killed the headteacher of a girls' school near the Afghan capital after he ignored warnings to stop teaching girls, government officials have said.
Khan Mohammad, the head of the Porak girls' school in Logar province, was shot dead near his home on Tuesday, said Deen Mohammad Darwish, a spokesman for the Logar governor.
"He was killed because he wanted to run the school," Darwish said.
Mateen Jafar, the education director in Logar, about an hour's drive from the capital, Kabul, said Mohammad had received several death threats from the Taliban warning him not to teach girls.
Jafar said Mohammad's son was wounded in the attack.
Education for women was banned by the Taliban government from 1996 to2001 as un-Islamic. There are periodic attacks against schoolgirls, their teachers and school buildings.
Women have won back some rights, including education and the right to vote, since the Taliban were toppled after the US-led invasion of late 2001.
The Afghan government and its western backers have pledged to guarantee those advances, although the promise seems precarious as Afghan leaders begin a reconciliation process that includes talks with the Taliban.
Development agencies fear that western governments are focusing too heavily on plans to complete a security handover from foreign forces to Afghans by the end of 2014 without cementing gains for women, such as education.
Girls have returned to schools in recent years, particularly in Kabul, although such rights are harder to enforce in the more remote and conservative areas of Afghanistan.
Under the Taliban women were barred from access to healthcare and made to wear burqas covering them from head to toe, and only boys were allowed to attend school. Many of those customs are still widespread.
Girls have had acid thrown in their faces by hardline Islamists while walking to school and schools have been set on fire. Last year there was a spate of mysterious gas poisonings at girls' schools, including some in Kabul, in which dozens of girls fell ill.
Obama grovels to these jihadis -- making breathtaking concessions -- thereby aiding their advancement.
Oh, and note the leftmedia's use of the "conservative" when describing jihadists true to the mandate of jihad and Islamic teachings.

In one of the Muslim Brotherhood's documents delineating its strategy for Islamizing the United States and entered into evidence in the largest Hamas funding trial in American history, it calls for the establishment of "centers" that will function in American cities much like Muhammad's base in Medina. Soros media
Nazi collaborator George Soros smear machine, Media Matters, is characteristically rabid over the pro-Israel voices that refuse to go along with Obama's anti-Israel pogram of ethnically cleansing Israel of the Jews. The idea that 500,000 Jews would have to be "relocated" (where have we heard that before?) is criminal. Try "relocating" 500,000 Muslims -- would anyone dare suggest such a thing?

Anti-Christian violence in Faisalabad: tombs desecrated, young woman gang-rape
PAKISTAN
Muslim landowners use tractors to plough over a Christian cemetery in order to seize the land illegally. A 29-year-old mother is drugged and raped by six men. In both cases, police covers up for the culprits. Government must act, Faisalabad priest says.

Faisalabad (AsiaNews) – Christian tombs were recently desecrated and a young Christian woman was gang-raped for an entire night. In both cases, police refused to file a First Information Report, allowing the culprits to escape justice. These are examples of the ordinary violence visited upon Pakistan's Christian minority. Whether it involves Christian-owned land and property or individuals who are targeted because they are defenceless, victims will not find justice with the country's legal system. Gradually, Pakistan's 'Islamisation' slowly progresses, especially in the densely populated province of Punjab.
The Pakistan Christian Post reports that, in Chak Jhumra (Faisalabad), Muslim landowners destroyed and desecrated a Christian graveyard, using a tractor to plough over a number of tombs. Buried coffins were broken and the bones of the dead were brought to the surface. The local police refused to open an inquiry, whilst the landowners utter threats against local Christians to get them to stop legal proceedings.
The Faisalabad chapter of the National Commission for Justice and Peace of the Pakistani Catholic Church has intervened in the affair. A team sent by the commission visited the desecrated graveyard and collected evidence.
However, a local Muslim has filed a claim, saying he owned the land on which the cemetery is located. The first hearing in the case is scheduled for 13 June 2011.
Fr Joseph Jamil, a Faisalabad priest, strongly condemned the anti-Christian violence. "The Church," he said, "is closing monitoring the issue."
"Landowners and extremists are actively involved against the Christian minority in Punjab," he told AsiaNews. "Most attacks happen in the central part of the province." The government, he said, should "take charge of the situation and defend the minority."
As additional evidence of the prevailing atmosphere of violence, a story came to light involving a 29-year-old Christian woman who was abducted by a Muslim co-worker, roughed up, drugged and gang-raped.
Afshan Sabir is a factory worker and a mother of three. She was assaulted over night on 27 March in an unspecified area near Gojra. When she woke up, she sought help in a state of disorientation. She later tried to file a complaint with the local police station. However, instead of helping the woman, police officers helped the rapists cover their tracks.
On this occasion, the National Commission for Justice and Peace also intervened, providing the victim with legal counsel and following the case on her behal
Anthony has been caught with his pants down. Well, sorta. It seems he was tweeting a crotch shot to his college-age girlfriend in Seattle when he accidentally tweeted it publicly instead of as a DM (direct message). He is spinning now (saying his account was hacked). But it looks like the snake is lying.
Big Government broke the story here:
Hacked or hung?
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY 9″) finds himself in a late night online pickle.
This evening a photo surfaced on Congressman Weiner's yfrog account and in his verified Twitter timeline of a man in his underwear with an erection. The photo was reportedly sent to a woman on Twitter. We've protected her name and her account, which was at one time verified to be active but has since been deleted after the photo in question was deleted. Coincidentally, the rest of the photos in the congressman's alleged yfrog account were also deleted around 11 p.m. eastern.
Is this the Tweet in question? Was Weiner hacked?
Weiner, who married Hillary Clinton's longtime assistant, Huma Abedin, last year, has been Tweeting about hockey this evening. Confusion reigns online as puzzled Weiner followers wonder what occurred to Weiner's timeline.
The photo, stored at Weiner's alleged yfrog account, is connected to his verified Twitter account. Were his yfrog and Twitter accounts hacked as well?
Rep. Weiner claims that his Facebook account was hacked. We were unable, at this late hour, to reach anyone at Congressman Weiner's offices for comment.
As one commenter pointed out at Politico:
First, he posted three hours before the alleged hack post, and four minutes after. This means he somehow wrestled control of his account back from the hackers quickly. How is this possible? That would be quite a feat, either through password guessing or some sort of Twitter security hole. If it happened, why didn't we hear about how?
Second, if he lost control of the account, standard Twitter practice is to remove the "Verified Account" status until Twitter can confirm the account is back under the control of the named person. Yet, the @RepWeiner account as of this writing is still Verified.
Third, such hacks these days are crimes, and are especially serious when directed at Members of Congress. If his Twitter account has been compromised, what else would the attackers have access to? Instead of reporting the attack to the FBI though, Weiner has made jokes, and in fact keeps joking about it. This is unreasonable behavior in the face of an actual attack, however if it wasn't hacked, then to report one would probably be a crime in itself.
There are at least two demonstrably false statements issued to the New York Post on behalf of Representative Anthony Weiner by his spokesperson, Dave Arnold.
Here's the first [emphasis mine]:
The tech-savvy congressman saw the picture almost immediately. He had been tweeting about a hockey game just a few minutes earlier.
An analysis of Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter timeline has already been done here at Big Government that clearly shows Weiner's Twitter account had been publicly silent for 3 hrs. and 24 mins. prior to the Tweeting of the inappropriate image. Consequently, there was no Tweet about a hockey game "just a few minutes earlier."  Therefore, that statement simply isn't true.
Rep. Weiner's spokesman then falsely claims that after removing the image in question, Weiner joked about the incident a mere 15 minutes later. Again, from the Post:
Weiner pulled the shot himself, but not before it had been retweeted and screen-grabbed by several followers. Weiner, a voracious user of Twitter, wrote a humorous response about 15 minutes later.
But here is the question. Why is it, every time a Republican gets caught doing something stupid or immoral, he resigns? From Mark Foley to Jack Ryan. (Obama was allegedly behind the unsealing of Ryan's divorce papers, forcing his withdrawal from the 2004 Senate race. His replacement, Alan Keyes, would go on to lose the general election to State Senator and future President of the United States, Barack Obama.) Barney Frank ran a gay prostitution ring out of his apartment, not to mention the subsequent discovery of marijuana plants growing at his home. The Democrats never pay a price for wrongdoing. Barney Frank went on to chair the House Committee on Financial Services (presiding over the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle).
In February, former Republican congressman Chris Lee resigned after an extramarital online flirtation was exposed. A Democrat replaced Lee in last week's special election.
As for Weiner, I was not fooled by his recent marriage to Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's alleged paramour. I always thought it was a backdoor Democrat deal. The rumor mill was rife for years. Huma and Hillary were closerthanthis. Everybody knew.
Weiner is a snake. He'd sell his mother for power and DC clout. Clearly, he was happy to be the beard.
.... a top level U.S. Department of Justice official is telling Big Head DC that Michael Musto's rumor about Hillary Clinton fooling around with one of her top female aides Huma Abedin is based in reality!
"I am close enough to Hillary and Huma to tell you that this 'rumor' is true," the official says. "It is well known inside her campaign that Hillary and Huma are an item.
"If you call Hillary's residence in DC first thing in the morning, Huma answers the phone," the official continues. "Same thing late at night and on the road. It's a closely guarded secret that Hillary's inner circle guards at all costs."

Flashback November 2007:
You read it at Atlas first here back on Halloween. Drudge has it now. I am not reporting it because it is a lesbian thang, I am concerned and distressed that a Muslim raised in Saudi Arabia whose father was an 'Islamic scholar' in Saudi Arabia  would have such intimate access to a would be President.
At the age of 2, her family then relocated to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where she lived until returning to the States for college. She attended George Washington University. Her father, who died when she was 17, was an Islamic and Middle Eastern scholar of Indian decent. He founded his own institute devoted to Western-Eastern and interfaith understanding and reconciliation and published a journal focusing on Muslim minorities living in the diaspora. Her mother, a renowned professor in Saudi Arabia, is Pakistani.
And from this puff piece on Huma:
"No one knows anything about her," said one political aide. "She's like Hillary's secret weapon."
Weiner planned on winning New York's next Mayoral election. He was counting on Bill (who presided over the Huma/Weiner nuptials) and Hillary Clinton's significant support. Quid pro quo, ya know. Let's pray this buries any shot he had.

In-Depth Issues:

Iran Aiding Syrian Crackdown - Joby Warrick (Washington Post)
U.S. officials say Iran is dispatching increasing numbers of trainers and advisers - including members of its elite Quds Force - into Syria to help crush anti-government demonstrations that are threatening to topple Iran's most important ally in the region.
The influx of Iranian manpower is adding to a steady stream of aid from Tehran that includes not only weapons and riot gear but also sophisticated surveillance equipment that is helping Syrian authorities track down opponents through their Facebook and Twitter accounts, the sources said.
Iranian-assisted computer surveillance is believed to have led to the arrests of hundreds of Syrians in recent weeks.

Syrian Tanks Attack Towns that Held Protests - Bassem Mroue (AP)
Syrian government troops backed by tanks attacked two central towns Sunday in an attempt to stop round-the-clock protests against President Bashar Assad's regime, killing at least two people and wounding several others.
Security forces in several other parts of the country fired on crowds holding overnight demonstrations, causing casualties.

Syrian Protesters Burn Hizbullah Leader Nasrallah's Pictures (Reuters-Gulf News-Dubai)
Protesters on Friday burned pictures of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah in the Syrian city of Albu Kamal on the Iraqi border.
Nasrallah's speech in Beirut this week in support of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad infuriated demonstrators and activists, a tribal leader in the province said.

Abbas: Future State Free of All Israelis(UPI)
Speaking before the Arab League in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas said the future Palestinian state should be free of all Israelis.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Arab League issued a statement citing its appreciation for President Obama's commitment to a two-state solution based on 1967 lines, the Gulf Times reported.

Egypt's Mubarak Fined by Cairo Court (Reuters)
An Egyptian court on Saturday fined ousted President Hosni Mubarak and two former officials 540 million Egyptian pounds ($90.64 million) for cutting off mobile and Internet services during January protests, a court source said.
This was the first court ruling to be made against Mubarak since he was ousted on Feb. 11. Mubarak faces more serious charges, including ordering the killing of protestors, a charge which could carry the death penalty.

Israel's Unemployment Rate Drops to Six Percent - Gad Lior (Ynet News)

News Resources - North America, Europe, and Asia:
  • Palestinian State Requires UN Security Council Support
The president of the UN General Assembly said Friday there is no way that a Palestinian state could become a UN member without a recommendation from the Security Council. Joseph Deiss told a news conference that if the U.S. or any other permanent council member used its veto, the General Assembly would not be able to vote on membership for Palestine. President Obama said last weekend that no vote at the UN would ever create a Palestinian state, a strong indication that the U.S. would veto such a resolution.
Deiss, a former president of the Swiss Confederation, said the requirements for UN membership are clearly stated in the UN Charter: A state has to state its adherence to the Charter, the 15-member Security Council must then make a recommendation that requires nine "yes" votes and no veto by a permanent member, and only then can the General Assembly vote on membership, which must be approved by a two-thirds majority. • Canada Blocks Mention of 1967 Line by G8 Summit - Luke Baker and David Ljunggren
Group of Eight leaders had to soften a statement urging Israel and the Palestinians to return to negotiations because Canada objected to a specific mention of 1967 borders, diplomats said Friday. "The Canadians were really very adamant, even though Obama expressly referred to 1967 borders in his speech last week," one European diplomat said. The G8 communique said: "Negotiations are the only way toward a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict."  (Reuters)

Italian Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa told La Repubblica that while Italy "has no intention of abandoning Lebanon," he wanted to cut Rome's contribution to the UN force by more than a third. "At the moment we have 1,780 soldiers, but it's too many." Sources said the soldiers in the convoy of four vehicles were not wearing protective helmets or vests and the vehicles were not armored. Diplomatic sources on Saturday suggested Syria was involved in the roadside bomb that blew up a UN vehicle on Friday. The Lebanese daily An Nahar reported that the blast came after Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem threatened the EU that it would regret sanctions imposed on President Assad and other top Syrian officials. "I say this measure, just as it will harm Syria's interests, it will harm Europe's interest. And Syria won't remain silent about this measure," Muallem declared last week. (Jerusalem Post)

  • Netanyahu Warns Egypt Losing Control of Growing Terror Groups in Sinai - Jonathan Lis and Jack Khoury
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that Egypt's new military government was having a "hard time" controlling the rise of international terror organizations in the Sinai Peninsula. "International terror organizations are stirring in Sinai and their presence is increasing due to Sinai's connection to Gaza." "Hamas is strengthening in Egypt," Netanyahu added. "It transferred more of its activities to Egypt and less to Syria due to the turmoil there."  (Ha'aretz)

Over 400 al-Qaeda members have made their way into the Sinai Peninsula, a senior Egyptian security official told the Al-Hayyatsatellite television station on Monday. Egyptian security officials were pursuing the terrorists, who include Palestinians, Bedouins and foreign Arab citizens. The group was reportedly planning to carry out terror attacks in Egypt, and had carried out "a number of attacks against [Egyptian] security forces in the Sinai city of El Arish," an official told Al-Hayyat. (Jerusalem Post)
  • Experts Analyze Opening of Gaza-Egypt Crossing - Boaz Fyler
Some security experts and academics are convinced the opening of the Rafah border crossing on Saturday has some positive aspects. "If Egypt opens the crossing, Israel will supposedly no longer be responsible for supplying Gaza's daily needs and Egypt will become the official gateway," explained Ido Zelkovitz, an expert on Palestinian society and politics at Haifa University.
Maj.-Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, former National Security Council head, says that the opening of the crossing serves Israel's interests and should not be opposed. He added: "Claiming that opening the border would cause weapons smuggling is utter nonsense as Egypt effectively decides what goes in and out. And therefore if smuggling is being allowed now, an open border wi ll not change that."  (Ynet News)

The "official" opening of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza this weekend by Mubarak's successors, impeding the passage only of men of military age, was met in some Israeli circles with "quiet satisfaction." In Jerusalem the feeling is: If the Egyptians want to take responsibility for 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, more power to them. Cairo after all had control of the coastal enclave from 1948 to 1967. (TIME)
  • Peres to UN: Don't Mislead Palestinians - Omri Efraim
President Shimon Peres told deputy UN secretary-general Asha-Rose Migiro Sunday that the UN was misleading the Palestinians by allowing them to believe that a Palestinian state could be declared without first providing for Israel's security needs. The only way to establish such a state is through direct negotiations, Peres said. (Ynet News)
Global Commentary and Think-Tank Analysis (Best of U.S., UK, and Israel):
  • Canada Stands Firm on Mideast Plan - Editorial
Thankfully there was at least one G8 leader - Prime Minister Stephen Harper - who made a public point of reiterating to Obama what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told him last week - that Israel would not only be vulnerable but undefendable if it returned to the borders occupied prior to 1967's Six-Day War. It is terribly sad that Netanyahu, and now Harper, had to educate Obama that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is in bed with Hamas, and Israel would not negotiate with a state "backed by the Palestinian version of al-Qaeda." Without the demilitarization of Palestine and the neutering of Hamas, there can never be an official Palestinian state - even if the UN General Assembly and some equally misguided G8 leaders think otherwise. • Palestinian Statehood Cannot Be Realized at the Cost of Jewish Statehood - David Horovitz
Recently, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Palestinian Arabs who had left Israel while the Arab world tried to murder our state at birth, attempted a symbolic "return," with varying degrees of success, across the Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Egyptian borders, and from the West Bank and Gaza. They were warmly praised in this effort by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, the ostensibly moderate successor to Yasser Arafat with whom Israel has been trying for almost eight years to make peace.
The Nakba onslaught against sovereign Israel, and its moving endorsement by Israel's putative Palestinian partner, was the latest bleak demonstration of the Palestinians' insistent refusal, for close to two-thirds of a century, to internalize the fact that the Jews have a historic claim to this sliver of land, and that their demands for statehood cannot be realized at the cost of ours.
It is immensely troubling for many Israelis to recognize that our most important strategic partner is now publicly advocating, before any significant sign of Palestinian compromise on final status issues has been detected, that we withdraw, more or less, to the pre-1967 lines - the so-called "Auschwitz borders" - from which we were relentlessly attacked in our first two fragile decades of statehood. • Ahmadinejad versus Khamenei: The Revolutionary Guards Win - Ali Alfoneh
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad risks impeachment following his failed attempt to wrest control over the Intelligence Ministry from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) supported Khamenei to reinstate the intelligence minister and restrict Ahmadinejad's power. Whether Ahmadinejad is impeached or not, the latest conflict among the civilian leaders has made the IRGC the most important arbiter of power in the Islamic Republic. (American Enterprise Institute)
Observations:
Video: 1967 Lines Were Never a Border - Dore Gold (Fox News)

Israel's former UN ambassador Dore Gold told Fox News in an interview on May 27:
  • "I think the prime minister laid out something very fundamental and very important for the future of any talks. There's an expectation that Israel withdraws to the 1967 lines, which were never a border for the State of Israel. They were where armies had stopped in an earlier war when Israel had been invaded. What the prime minister said is that those lines were indefensible and therefore Israel needs defensible borders, and in any future talks, that will be one of the points that Israel will insist on."
  • "In 2004 the State of Israel received a presidential letter that was confirmed by both houses of Congress, saying that Israel would not be expected to fully withdraw to the 1949 armistice line - that's the technical name of the 1967 line. George Shultz, who was secretary of state of Ronald Reagan, said that Israel would never withdraw to the 1967 lines. So it hasn't always been a reference term. I think President Obama introduced some wiggle room in terms of what the expectation is of Israel with reference to that line."
  • "He mentioned 'land swaps.' The Palestinians see a land swap as representing a very small amount of territory. We need defensible borders - the Jordan Valley - that great barrier that protects Israel either from a conventional attack or from massive infiltration by al-Qaeda and other forces from the east. That is how we've kept Israel secure for over 40 years. And therefore that kind of deployment, that kind of presence, is what we are going to need in the future."
  • "Put yourself in the position of an Israeli prime minister. You look around at the Middle East and you don't know if the countries around you will even be there in five years or in three years. Will the governments be changed? Will we have more radical regimes? What is going to happen to Iraq after the U.S. army leaves? Will it become an Iranian satellite? And therefore, all the more so, Israel needs defensible borders."
  • "We can make peace. But peace is based on compromise, compromise in which you protect your vital interests. Our vital interests are in Jerusalem and in keeping those borders that will allow us to protect ourselves."
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.  ~Herm Albright~

Israel should not be fearing world opinion. Israel should be making the world fear (respect) her!!!  And remember, it is the rich oil cartels who rule the world, NOT the Zionists!!
