Dear Members
GOOD NEWS

Two in Minnesota

1. From Minnesota Majority

After a lively Thursday morning debate in the Senate, in which bill-opponents

presented an astonishing array of misinformation and mischaracterizations of the

bill's effect, SF509 passed on a straight party-line vote.  Even though polls have

repeatedly shown that 80% of Minnesotans support Voter ID, not a single Democrat

voted in favor of the measure.

Senator Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove), the bill's chief author, deftly deflected

unfounded criticism. "The integrity of the entire election process hinges on two issues

 – verification of an individual's identity an proof that the individual is voting in the

precinct where they live. The public deserves to have confidence in the integrity of

our election system. I'm proud that my colleagues in the Senate stood in favor of

this critical measure today," said Limmer.

The bill must now be passed in the House and then go to the governor's desk for

his signature.  Governor Dayton has not yet said whether he will support the measure.

Indiana & Alabama Legislatures Approve E-Verify Legislation

The Indiana House and both chambers of the Alabama legislature have approved
legislation that would require businesses in the state to use E-Verify. The bill approved
in Indiana is the tougher of the two, requiring most employers to check new hires through
E-Verify, while the Alabama bill requires limited use of E-Verify.
In Indiana, the House passed version includes a verification check for individuals
applying for welfare benefits, but it stripped out Senate-passed language that authorized
local police officers to check the immigration status of individuals they suspected of
being in the country illegally.
In Alabama, both the House and Senate passed bills that would allow police officers to
check immigration status, but the provisions on E-Verify have a significant difference.
The House-passed bill requires businesses with at least 25 employees to use E-Verify,
but the Senate-passed bill only requires businesses that contract with the state or
receive grants from the state to use E-Verify.

From Indiana FIRE and this
Conservatives won a four year campaign calling for a crackdown on
illegal immigration.  Hoosiers will now learn the true cost to taxpayers with a
bill being sent to Washington, DC.  Companies that benefit somehow from
government will be required to use the free online federal web tool known as
E-Verify to screen new hires ensuring they are able to work and reside in America.
All government entities in Indiana will now be required to use E-Verify.
E-Verify alone makes SB 590 a victory, but there's more.  Strong Sanctuary City
language was passed allowing and empowering private citizens to file in court to
compel a local community to comply with existing federal law.
Prosecutors will have more tools to help the crackdown.  Not only will they be able
to impound vehicles from those that traffic human beings, but those that engage
in false identification, fraud, and duplication will be held accountable.
Businesses will be held accountable by losing state contracts, tax breaks and
benefits.  Law enforcement will be able to make arrests when they have a
detainer or removal order against an illegal immigrant.  The rest of our
law enforcement provisions will be sent to a Summer Study Committee for
further review to debunk opposition demagoguery.  The Lieutenant Governor
chairs our Counter Terrorism Task force which includes our State Homeland S
ecurity Director and Superintendent of State Police as well as members from
local law enforcement.  All would provide information to this Summer Study
Committee with the end goal of trying to come up with some type of State policy
with Federal ICE officers on the enforcement of existing law.  The reality on the
ground is that cops deal with this issue daily.  When they are told to release
unlawful immigrants it siphons off morale.  Plus, each community is treated
differently by ICE resulting in disparate treatment depending on the community
and the circumstance.  I personally believe this inconsistency feeds the
racial profiling myth.
Verification of citizenship will be required for any and all public benefits as well.
So at the end of the day, the only component we could not get in SB 590 was the
English Only provisions which passed out of the Senate and House in different
forms.  However, at the end of the session it was deemed too risky to pursue
and ultimately became the last issue taken off the table to give us

NOT A SURPRISE BUT STILL UNBELIEABLE

Obama blasts Ga. bill targeting illegal immigrants

President Barack Obama called Georgia's Arizona-style immigration enforcement
bill "a mistake," possibly setting the stage for a showdown between Georgia and
the federal government.

Opponents of Georgia's House Bill 87 said they were glad to see the president
weigh in against the legislation, but they want the Obama administration to go
further and challenge it in court. At the same time, supporters said the state
needs to act because the federal government has failed to do enough about
illegal immigration.

Citizen's voices are needed for mandatory E-Verify without exemptions

The fate of mandatory E-Verify for Florida will be determined this week, by May 6th

session end.  Citizens, FLIMEN, Tea Parties, and Minutemen lobbied hard

all last week but those who would benefit by continuing mass illegal immigration

have been lobbying hard too, including hordes of illegal aliens who invaded the

capitol last week.  The illegal aliens and their supporters have promised to

continue their massive demonstrations and disruptions within the Capitol during

the last week of the session.  Closely aligned but quieter, the business interests

including the Chamber of Commerce, agricultural interests and other for-profit

special interests have been lobbying hard for exemptions.

What we now have in Tallahassee is an epic battle between citizens and

special interests who will continue to profit by the hiring of the hiring of

illegal aliens over citizens and legal workers.  Athough citizens have made it

very clear that the state policy must be to transition to a legal work force, the

fate of mandatory E-Verify without exemptions is far from certain.

DURING THIS CRITICAL LAST WEEK IT TAKE THE VOICES OF CITIZENS LIKE

YOU TO DETERMINE WHETHER MANDATORY E-VERIFY WITHOUT EXEMPTIONS

IS ENACTED.

The House of Representatives has been far more responsive to the voices of

citizens and it is believed that the majority of Representatives will vote for

mandatory E-Verify without exemptions.  Unfortunately the Senate has been far

less supportive.  Disarray, weakening amendments and stalling have been the

the Senate's mode of operation from the beginning.

It's basically up to you now. Let them politely know you stand for citizens,

legal workers and the rule of law.

Please forward this message to everyone you can.

We need you to call Senators as listed below using these TALKING POINTS:

  • MANDATORY E-VERIFY WITHOUT EXEMPTIONS must be enacted this year.
  • The E-Verify language of SB2040 is grossly deficient so the Senate should adopt the strong mandatory E-Verify language of HB7089.
  • Industry expemptions are unfair and unacceptable.
  • There are 1.1 million unemployed in Florida while about 825,000 illegal aliens hold Florida jobs.
  • Illegal immigration in Florida is estimated to cost $5.5 billion annually and E-Verify will reduce these costs over time.
  • Florida has a $4 billion budget deficit and and E-Verify will reduce these costs over time.
