Malcolm,
I think you idea can work. The part does have to extend beyond the end of the fixed jaw so my guess is that the softjaw must be solid and not angle stock. You might have to clamp the stock to the movable jaw to keep it from sliding as force is applied. You would have to clamp the softjaw to the fixed jaw so it does not move from the side force.
The more I think about your idea, the more I like it. The softjaw really would not have to be clamped to the fixed jaw if a pin was used. You would then just have a pin on the softjaw and a hole in the fixed jaw. That would resist the side force. Alternately, the right end of the softjaw could have a stop on the back to grab the right end of the fixed jaw. This is looking better all the time :-)
At least on my movable jaw, I would need to trim off the end so it did not interfere with the saw blade. That would be best done by closing the movable jaw on the softjaw and taking a cut.

Why do you need two pieces. If you invert the soft jaw on the fixed jaw so the workpiece is on the saw table and allow the movable jaw to adjust to the angle on the workpiece, you only need one soft jaw.
That is providing the soft jaw extends over the moving jaw screw axis.

Yesterday I had to cut 6 diagonal braces for a new project. My trusty
horizontal/vertical bandsaw is set up to cut right angles although it can be
adjusted to cut 45 degrees. But it is such a pain to move these jaws. So
instead I quickly made up a pair of softjaws that hold the bar stock at 45
degrees.
