That was not quite what I intended. My idea was to use the aluminium angle against the fixed jaw in the same configuration as your original, but with the cutouts at the bottom and as your configuration, with one flat against the fixed jaw and the other leg sticking out at 90 deg.
Instead of the second piece of aluminium angle, only use the moving jaw. The length of the side of the aluminium angle against the fixed jaw should extend over the movable jaw axis so that the clamping force, from the moving jaw, will lie such that it clamps the aluminum angle against the fixed jaw. It looks from your photo that this may just be the case with your angle piece You will not then loose as much sawing capacity.
I haven't got any angle to use to produce a photo. If it is still not clear I could do a sketch if that would help.
