Wow that is so cool I agree that your students should learn some safety
before they start casting..I started casting when I was 20 years old with
books like gingery and learned to be safe after making a big mistake when I
Cast a large part with the sand way to wet the result was spitting metal and
hot water and steam in to the air..needless to say I learned my lesson to be
safer and not use much water..I use a welding apron as well now because some
times the heat from a large poor tends to send a wave of heat towards my
tommy and legs..I'm in no way a expert in casting but I do enjoy it and have
been doing it as a hobby for 20 years plus..I will put some pictures of the
ultra light helicopter when I get a little more done on it..I should get the
engine next week and the fuel tanks I hope...I have started the control
parts and then can put in the drive system..I have all them parts and the
tail rotor blades but it may be another month on the main rotor blades..I am
not sure if
I will paint it I tend to like the mad scientist look but we will see..my
uncle is saved and I know one day I will see him again in heaven but hope
not for another 100 years..lol...thanks

Yes, casting is such good fun that I find myself looking around for things
to make by casting. I've made knobs for a large format camera that I am
building as well as my lathe plus several other things.
As a Design and Technology teacher I am currently doing a jewellery project
with my year 8 students casting low melting point pewter using a variety of
moulds such as MDF, plaster of paris, sea shells, lost wax castings etc. I
have found it to be very educational, I'm not so sure about the kids.
I find aluminium casting much more fun but probably too dangerous to let the
kids loose on it.
Post some pictures of the helicopter.
I'm sorry to hear about your uncle.
