You might want to join the Casting Hobby yahoo group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/castinghobby/
and talk to Leon Risenhoover, who's building his own scale model ride-on railroad, and casting just about anything you care to name, including iron, do to it. He's got a really nice tilting furnace, propane fired, that he uses, but there are other options. There is also a Cupola Casting group, but I don't have the link for that one handy. You can search for it in My Groups from the Yahoo groups homepage, and find it pretty easily.
I've only gotten to see the furnace in operation in video, but I've seen it, cold, in person. Hope to make it to one of his casting sessions one of these days soon, as he'd not all that far from where I live, and a very nice guy!
