Years back I had Naval-Jelly, basically a jellyed acid. Put it on,
dissolves rust, and wash it off. Then put some surface protectant back on
it (thin coat of oil?) The good thing is it worked fast. But don't put it
on and 'walk away' for lunch or over night. When it stops reacting, it is
time to get it off. Then evaluate whether you need to put more on (if it is
really rough).
It is still sold in hardware stores, auto stores, etc.
I have also used iodine to loosen rusted bolts. Yep, go to your local
pharmacist and get some iodine. Sometimes works, sometimes not.
Basically anything that will react with the rust but not so much the metal
works.
If you could get some modeling clay, make a lip for a reservoir around the
rust, pour on some Coke, regular sugared, not diet, the phosphoric acid will
eat the rust. Should take a few days, but it eats the rust.
Clorox is basically a dilute hydrochloric acid, so it could be used. But
watch for the chlorine fumes they can get rough. ... Also one of the liquid
or foaming drain cleaners or something like CLR that is supposed to react
with calcium, lime, and rust should work.
Well, there are a few ideas. Let us know what works for you!

not me, etc, etc, weasel words, etc. Be safe, but enjoy.)
