Very nice article to get somebody started with DRO usage!
One thing that I need to comment on is the spud, it is a perfectly good way to do a rapid setup. You mention later in the article that sometimes dimensions are relative to each other and not so much other features on the part, sometimes you just need to be close to edge.
For example I may find the need to drill holes for the mounting of electronic components, say a terminal strip. The exact location of the strip doesn't matter much but putting the mounting holes on the right pitch does. In a similar way you might want to machine a casting for linear rails or whatever. The point is one should put the precision where it is most needed.
Someone mentioned DRO pictures and I have to agree. I realize they are all different but sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. A pic of the encoders and EEF wouldn't hurt either.
As to the unused function key that is a reality for most of us. I often work from tables generated either by hand or from a spreadsheet. This is especially the case if I need to drill a bunch of holes.
