Yes, but you might want to add some cloth to hold a volume of the
solution on the surface, and may want to wrap in plastic to keep the
moisture in (you don't want it to dry out).
Electricity speeds things up - add a battery charger, from memory the
part should be negative and some scrap steel should be positive, and the
rust falls off leaving good metal behind. You can also use sodium
hydroxide instead of molasses.
I have use this on many steel parts - just make sure you don't have any
aluminium in the parts (the aluminium will disappear).
