At work we use caustic soda to clean the metal of oils and then it goes into
a dilute (3 - 12 %) solution of hydrochloric acid at roughly 120 degrees F.
Takes anywhere from 20 min to 1 hour for most stuff. I have done this with
both steel and cast iron.
At home I use an electrolitic process. Kinda neat actually.
