[gingery_machines] RE: [atlas_craftsman] Re: updated article available: An Experimental Way to Statically Bal

Kay,

It might be a bad hearing. With the machine off, I don't feel any rough play
but I don't know how much play would cause this much vibration.

I did discover what might be a very tiny clue. With the grinder running at
full speed and both wheels trued, I feel vibration. When I bring a block of
metal up to the front of the base of the grinder, it just sits there and
does not make any noise. But when I do the same on the side of the base, it
makes a lot of noise. This tells me that the vibration is axial and not
radial. I believe this is telling me that the tiny in and out motion of each
wheel is not causing any problem but the tiny side to side (wobble) motion
is still too much.

I did try flipping one wheel over and that did not change anything. I then
flipped it back and rotated it in 90 degree increments. At each step and ran
the motor up to full speed and tried to hear any difference. No obvious
change.

I also made up a 0.2" thick washer with a set screw through the face near
the perimeter. I was able to change its wobble from 0 up to about 0.2". It
had no effect.

My guess is that if the bearings were bad, they would cause more radial
vibration. What do you think?

Rick

Rick,

Take this for what it;s worth... but WAG here, could you have a bad
bearing / bushing on the motor, where with nothing on the shaft it would be
fine, but when you load the shaft, vibration builds as a result of the
bearing working harder?
