This afternoon I got in the shop for about 40 minutes, that was all I could stand. (no air-conditioning) The button nut I put together worked real nice, but a lot of boring. I have some plastic rod about 1 1/4", I turned it down to 1" then I drilled the center hole to the size of 29/64". Before I took it out of the lathe I marked the side to drill it to 3/4" but not go all the way, I finished with my end mill to have a flat button. Then I made the button. The rod is 3/4" minus .005 then I put it into the outer part. I put two washers in the hole first then in my vise I used the 29/64" and drilled the button. after drilling the button I put the 3/4" in the drill and drilled the outer part of nut thru. Taking the button I threaded it, while it was in the vise I took the 3/4 end mill and cut the side toward the outside of button creating the release spot to slide. Put a coil spring in the hole followed by the bottom and it work real nice. For some
applications I could see it work very well. By the way working with plastic is easier than Aluminum and is not as hard on the tools. Just right for proto-work.
