Your generous compliments are appreciated. The Keats Face Plate you refer to likely accomplishes what an off center chuck I made a while back does. You can view some photos in my folder at

Doing off center turning on a lathe presented me with a couple of issues. Since it's off center, there is a fair amount of vibration. Also a great deal of care must be taken when holding the lathe chisel that it's not grabbed by the turning piece. Things get pretty exciting when tools get thrown at you.
The elliptical mechanism that I just completed resolves both the vibration problem and the possibility of tools getting caught and possibly causing injury and is why my comment about the tail wagging the dog. Instead of the work turning at a high speed, the cutter turns at a high speed.
Having said all that, please continue to point us toward other folks ideas.
