If you have a commercial foundry in the area, go buy a bag or two of
commercial sand from them. It will be more consistent.
But if you want to DIY, yes that is the formula. Mix them by weight.
(bathroom scales and buckets do well). The sand needs to be clean sand
rather than 'creek sand' or similar. The bags of 'play sand' at the retail
stores are OK, but expensive at times, but you don't need that much,
possibly 100 or 200#.
The bentonite is clay that I think you can pick up at a local farmers co-op,
Tractor Supply, or similar by the bag (100# bags I think). It is a clay
that is sometimes put into ponds to keep the bottoms from 'leaking' to much
water into the surrounding soil.
The formula isn't and exact science. Experiment, make small batches till
you find out what works for you!
